The Department of Mechanical, Biomedical and Manufacturing Engineering resides within the Faculty of Engineering in the Cork campus of MTU.
The Department offers a wide range of full-time, apprenticeship and part-time programmes covering Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Process Plant Technology.
The Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Manufacturing Systems (CAMMS), which resides within the Department, offers a portfolio of continuous professional development programmes.
Duties of the Post: The Assistant Lecturer will play an active role in the academic direction of courses including teaching, research, academic assessment and academic administration.
The appointee should carry out such duties as are assigned by management including but not limited to: (a) Teaching such assigned classes as deemed appropriate by management of the Munster Technological University (herein after, the University), day or evening, up to 630 hours per annum including supervision of post-graduate students where appropriate.
(b) Carrying out assessment, monitoring and evaluation of examinations work, and providing an academic and consultative support to students in their learning activities.
(c) Providing academic input on existing and new courses and course development.
(d) Engaging in research, consultancy and development work as appropriate.
(e) Participating in committees appropriate to courses and meetings convened by management.
(f) Maintaining appropriate records and making available information as required by management.
(g) Engaging in promotion including student recruitment.
(h) Promoting scholarship (i) Participating in the development, implementation and maintenance of academic quality assurance arrangements.
(j) Participating in appropriate activities necessary to the development of their department/faculty and of the University.
(k) Directing and supervising the work of Tutor/Demonstrator and taking academic responsibility for the academic standards of this work.
When an Assistant Lecturer is supervising a Tutor/Demonstrator a reduction in teaching hours will be applied on the basis of a one-hour reduction per three hours demonstration/tutorials supervised.
The performance of these duties will require attendance in addition to class contact hours during the normal working week.
Teaching Hours: For the Assistant Lecturer level, the post is full-time requiring a maximum of 630 class contact hours per annum, with a norm of 18 class contact hours per week, which may be varied from 16 to 20 in consultation with the Assistant Lecturer.
A weighting of hours to apply to hours worked after 6.00 p.m.
The weighting to be 1.25.
The appointee shall carry out the lawful instructions of the President (or authorised Officer) and comply with the requirements and regulations of the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.
Qualification Requirements: Essential: A relevant Level 8 Honours Primary Degree (second class or higher) from a recognised degree awarding authority, majoring in degree level studies in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering or cognate discipline.
AND/OR An equivalent relevant professional qualification obtained through examination.
AND Not less than three years of relevant experience subsequent to obtaining the above qualifications.

Candidates should have recent and appropriate research, industrial, teaching and/or experience in a number of pertinent areas such as: Computer-Aided Design (CAD), computational and mathematical modelling, and systems-level design, simulation, or application of subtractive manufacturing processes.
CNC machine tool programming and operation within precision engineering and advanced metrology environments End-to-end CAD/CAM workflow development, verification, optimization, and lifecycle management Advanced tooling preparation and optimisation Engineering design methodologies incorporating regulatory standards, quality assurance, and compliance frameworks.
Mechanical Engineering science principles applied to product and process engineering Digital twin development, data-driven modelling, and application of machine learning in manufacturing systems.
Implementation of Industry 4.0/5.0 technologies within precision manufacturing, including cyber-physical systems, data integration, and smart factory principles.
Integration of environmental, sustainability, and life-cycle considerations into engineering design and manufacturing decision-making.
The appointee will be required to deliver modules across programmes in the Department of Mechanical, Biomedical and Manufacturing Engineering and on other programmes as required across the university.
The successful candidate will be expected to initiate and to contribute to research, programme promotion and development into the future.
Team-working, the promotion of learning/scholarship and engagement with external stakeholders are necessary attributes for this role.
Remuneration: Salary scale effective 1 February 2026: Assistant Lecturer: New Entrant: €47,101.00 pa to €63,735.00 per annum.
Existing Public Sector Employees: €51,664.00 pa to €63,735.00 per annum.
The rate of remuneration for all appointments may be adjusted from time to time with government policy.
