Job Purpose:
To operate and maintain spark erosion (EDM) machines to produce high-precision components according to engineering drawings, quality standards, and production schedules.
The role requires technical accuracy, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of machining processes.
Key Responsibilities:
Set up and operate spark erosion (EDM) machines (wire cut, die sink, or both) to achieve required tolerances and surface finishes.
Interpret and work from technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD models.
Prepare electrodes and fixtures as required for machining operations.
Monitor machining progress and make necessary adjustments to ensure quality and accuracy.
Perform routine inspection of components using precision measuring instruments (micrometres, verniers, gauges).
Maintain accurate records of jobs, materials used, and machine settings.
Conduct regular machine maintenance and ensure the equipment is in good working order.
Collaborate with toolmakers, CNC operators, and quality inspectors to optimise workflow and resolve technical issues.
Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental policies at all times.
Identify opportunities for process improvement and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Skills and Qualifications:
Essential:
Minimum 5 years of Proven experience as a Spark Eroder / EDM Operator in a precision engineering or toolmaking environment.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and tolerances.
Competence in setting up and operating EDM machines (e.g., Charmilles, Sodick, Agie, Mitsubishi, etc.).
Strong understanding of materials (steel, carbide, aluminium, etc.) and machining characteristics.
Proficiency in the use of measuring tools and inspection techniques.
Attention to detail and ability to maintain high standards of accuracy.
Good problem-solving and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Very Desirable:
CAD/CAM programming experience.
Formal training in toolmaking, precision engineering, or similar.
Knowledge of CNC milling, turning, or grinding.
Familiarity with ISO ***** quality systems.
Working Conditions:
Workshop/factory environment.
May involve occasional overtime or shift work depending on production demand.
