After 56 years of providing essential support and services to those experiencing disadvantage and marginalisation, Sligo Social Services has a new name: Cornerstone.
The organisation was established in 1969, growing from small beginnings to offer assistance in areas such as homelessness, social care, meals-on-wheels, childcare services, and other direct support for those in need.
Over the decades, the organisation has touched the lives of thousands. Guided by a clear vision, Cornerstone aims to ensure that everyone in our community has a good quality of life and lives in a fair and just society. Our core focus remains on the needs of those who use our services.
As society has evolved, so have the challenges faced by children, families, and communities we serve. Our success lies in our ability to adapt and continue providing vital services to those on the margins. Recently, we have expanded our reach across Sligo, Leitrim, and Donegal.
We chose a new name to reflect our current organisation, the support we deliver, and our operational areas. Changing our name was a significant journey—one that involved letting go of the old and embracing a new identity that truly represents us today. After careful consideration, we adopted the name "Cornerstone."
A cornerstone is the first stone set in a building, on which everything else depends. It also signifies an essential quality or feature that something relies on. By offering a range of personal and community-based services, Cornerstone provides the stability that empowers individuals to rebuild their lives from difficult circumstances.
While our name has changed, our commitment remains the same. The same level of support and programmes will continue to be provided across three counties by our dedicated staff, volunteers, and CE Participants, promoting justice, equality, and human dignity.
