Day Program Instructor
Statement of Purpose: To provide teaching and support to Broadview Village Enrichment Program
participants within the program philosophy
Accountable To:
* BVEP Supervisor
* Day program Manager
Indirectly to the Team Leader/ Counsellor in Charge
Indirectly accountable to the people we support, the BVEP Team, the organization
This is a unionized position
Qualifications: For Full Time Day Program With Caseload instructor:
* Completed Developmental Services Worker diploma or other degree/diploma
related to human services
* Experience working with people who have developmental disabilities
* Valid Standard First Aid certificate (including CPR)
* Training and/or experience in medication administration
* Training and/or experience in personal care (assisting with G-tube feeding,
continence devices…)
* Training and/or experience in supporting individuals through ambulates,
mobilizers, transfers
* Computer skills (Microsoft word, publisher, excel, internet)
* Experience in individual program planning
* Experience in community outreach
* Teaching skills (demonstrated ability to implement various teaching
approaches and group instructor skills)
* Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Certificate and Behaviour Management skills
* Driver’s license is an asset
* Competency in swimming an asset
For Full-time, Part Time & Relief Day Program Instructor
* Completed or partial Developmental Services Worker diploma or
other degree/diploma related to human services
* Experience working with people who have developmental disabilities
* Valid Standard First Aid Certificate (including CPR)
* Training and/or experience in medication administration or obtain within
probationary period
* Training and/or experience in personal care (facilitating G-tube feeding,
continence devices…)
* Training and/or experience in supporting individuals through ambulates,
mobilizers, transfers
* Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certificate and Behavior Management skills
* Computer skills (Microsoft word, excel, internet)
* Teaching skills an asset
* Driver’s license is an asset
* Competency in swimming an asset
PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Act as a role model for all participants as reflected by appearance, behaviour and attitude
* Perform caseload responsibilities as assigned
* Provide support to participant’s personal development as decided through individual support planning
* Know and respond to the safety and health care of participants
* Provide teaching and support to Enrichment Program participants
* Document and maintain records as required
* Provide ideas and feedback on program content
* Participate in monthly planning and share responsibility of preparing monthly program calendar as assigned
* Participate in PA days as assigned
* Ensure learning opportunities are provided using agency and community resources
* Follow and promote the agency and program goals and philosophies
STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES
* Maintain effective communication
* Participate in Providing orientation and support to family members, volunteers and new staff
* Provide support and guidance to co-workers, placement students and/or volunteers and agency staff
* Represent BVEP participants and staff on committees and at other meetings as delegated
* Attend and participate in meetings and staff development training as assigned
WORKPLACE, FACILITY ORGANIZATION
* Adherence to individual food lists and restrictions and Lunch time protocols
* Ensure the general BVEP facility appearance is clean and tidy before the shift is completed
* Account for use of monies, TTC tokens, household supplies, etc.
* Complete daily clean up and maintenance routines as required (i.e. dishes, washrooms, floors, disinfecting toys teaching items, cleaning art supplies, laundry and stocking shelves, etc.)
HEALTH & SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Comply with the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and regulations
* Adhere to agency’s Health & Safety Policies and program
* Complete daily walkthroughs/inspections of site as assigned
* Report/Complete and forward maintenance requisition forms to Program Supervisor
* Report accidents/injuries/workplace hazards in a timely manner
* Responsible of agency’s vehicles, equipment and property
* Follow the principles of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention philosophy
NOTE: The position of day program instructor may also encompass the designation(s) of Counselor-In-Charge (CIC) and/or FT Day Program Instructor with Caseload, as described on the following pages
COUNSELLOR IN CHARGE (Usually assigned to FT staff only)
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
The role of the C.I.C. is to oversee the program needs in the absence of the Program Supervisor/Manager
SHIFT RESPONSIBILITIES
* Direct, delegate, coordinate, organize and ensure the completion of shift responsibilities
* Ensure relevant information is communicated
* Ensure adequate staff coverage to meet the needs of the program. In the event of staffing shortage, C.I.C. is responsible for the coverage of the succeeding shift until back up staff can arrive.
* Ensure shift reports and program data are completed.
* Ensure incident reports are completed and forwarded to Program Supervisor/Manager
* Ensure emergency procedures are followed
* Ensure that medications Policies and Procedures are followed
HEALTH & SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Comply with the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and regulations
* Adhere to the agency’s Health & Safety policies and procedures
* Ensure the completion of daily walkthroughs/inspections of site
* Report accidents/injuries/workplace hazards in a timely manner
The above responsibilities are to be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, exemplifying the employee Code of Conduct.
PHYSICAL EFFORT/DEXTERITY REQUIRED: The performance of the job requires bending/twisting/lifting; considerable walking; standing; writing; computer work; and light housekeeping.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The incumbent’s work environment is typically in a day program/classroom type facility.
The incumbent works under generally agreeable conditions, with the following exceptions:
Exposure to dirt, bodily fluids, bodily waste
Noise
Dealing with angry and abusive people
Verbal abuse
Handling garbage
Odours
EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS: The incumbent may be exposed to risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to the following:
Physical attacks by others (i.e., being attacked by a participant)
Exposure to infectious diseases
Exposure to toxic chemicals
Exposure to bodily fluids
Sharp objects
Other dangerous situations
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to Health and Safety rules):

WHMIS Training
First Aid certification
Police/Criminal Reference Check –Vulnerable Sector Screening
Nonviolent crisis intervention training
Work Schedule: 32.5 hours a week, Monday to Friday 8:30am - 3:30pm, 3 days at 1132 Broadview Ave., East York, ON M4K 2S5, 2 days at 150 Railside Rd, North York, ON M3A 1A3
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $23.67 to $25.78 with a maximum of $27.88.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
