Job Title: Professor and Head of the School of Nursing and MidwiferyDepartment: School of Nursing and MidwiferyReporting To: Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic AffairsLocation: RCSI, Dublin, IrelandContract type/duration: Professor level appointee, full time permanent contract, 4-year renewable term as Head of SchoolRole Purpose and Objective: RCSI is seeking to appoint its next innovative leader to the position of RCSI Professor and Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery.The post is a permanent professorial appointment within RCSI, appointed as Head of School. Head of School appointments at RCSI are appointed for an initial 4-year term and renewable thereafter for subsequent 4-year terms, subject to agreement, satisfactory performance and in accordance with RCSI policies and practice. The appointee will report to the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs while in the role of Head of School. This internationally respected leader will bring extensive experience in education, research and executive management to the role. In particular, the candidate will have extensive academic experience in the field of nursing and midwifery education as well as the vision to Professor and Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery 9 look to the future in emerging areas that might appeal prospective students. They will build on our success to date, leading and maintaining an environment of excellence in education, which will enable the delivery, and continuous improvement of all of our educational programmes as well as looking for future growth opportunities. They must also be an internationally competitive leader in an area of research aligned to nursing, midwifery, clinical care and our wider thematic research areas. The appointment will substantially increase the research presence and profile of the School both nationally and internationally and will have the capability to thrive in this environment and grow RCSI's reputation for in the area of nursing and midwifery. They will be able to demonstrate strong leadership and be capable of inspiring the School's education and research efforts by enhancing its reputation for scholarly and professional excellence. Successful experience as a senior academic and/ or department lead role is essential. Experience working in an inter-professional or multi-cultural context would be a distinct advantage as the successful appointee will actively collaborate across Schools and other RCSI campuses. Previous examples of similar collaborations at a national and/or international level would be valuable.Specific responsibilities include:Provide vision, leadership and innovation to develop and drive the goals of the School of Nursing and Midwifery in education and research in this field locally and internationally.Develop and deliver a strategic plan for the School aligned with RCSI organisational strategy com/about/strategy.Grow research grants and outputs through empowerment, development and support of academic staff in the School and leverage synergies across RCSI and beyond.Enhance the School's educational profile through improving on quality of our current programmes whilst looking for new growth opportunities at the post graduate level.Develop and enhance relationships with our stakeholders, regulators and others relevant bodies.Actively facilitate and seek to leverage the synergy of educational development in the rich multi-professional and international multi-cultural environment, which is an intrinsic part of RCSI as a specific focus of activity.Enhance RCSI's educational profile to become a global leader through the development of novel educational approaches which lead to high impact peer reviewed publications and the development of an active and enthusiastic community of practice and actively promote it.Drive the development and implementation of novel, personalised educational approaches that leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance learner engagement, adapt to individual needs, and optimise educational outcomes.Continue to develop evidence-based approaches and involve faculty in producing systematic educational reviews to enhance knowledge but also increase RCSI citations.Develop and support an active cadre of career educationalists through supervision of higher degrees, e.g. PhDs, by traditional and research tracks.Develop and support the educational research groupings across RCSI in the strategic areas of Population Health and Health Services and Nursing & MidwiferyActively seek research funding nationally and internationally.Develop partnerships and networks that promote the School's vision through educational innovation and research.Contribute to reputational enhancement in the field of nursing and midwifery by representing RCSI at various conferences and events.Manage an inter-disciplinary team of academics, researcher and professional services staff in the School.Personal Competencies Associated with this Role:Have a proven ability to engage with key opinion leaders nationally and internationally in the area of nursing and midwifery education and research in order to promote its essential value at RCSI.Possess excellent leadership skills, with an ability to lead a diverse team of academic, administrative and technical professionals in a changing environment.Demonstrate an ability to influence, manage and foster complex relationships at all levels.Inspire, motivate, develop and mentor the existing team of highly-performing and ambitious staff, throughout their career stages.Show strong understanding and knowledge of strategic planning processes and the ability to devise communications strategies to promote the School of Nursing and Midwifery at RCSI and beyond.Be able to inspire the wider academic community and non- academic audiences with the message of the School.Demonstrate a clear commitment to interdisciplinary and interprofessional working.Be a clear communicator.Knowledge & Experience:Hold an appropriate higher-level degree such as PhD, Prof Doc or ED Doc relevant to this post.Be registered, or eligible for registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland.Significant experience in Nursing and Midwifery education, including leading and innovating on education programme.Has an in-depth knowledge of current issues and opportunities in the field.Have a strong track record of senior authorship in high impact peer-reviewed publications in education, research, clinical practice in the field of nursing and or midwifery.Have a strong track record of writing and obtaining external funding in the field of nursing and/or midwifery education, research and clinical practice.Have a strong track record of conducting research including: systematic literature reviews and quantitative or qualitative research.Have a strong track record of supervision at doctoral level.Be a recognised international expert in the subject as evidenced by a track record of regular invited talks at international conferences/events in relation to nursing and midwifery education, research and clinical practice.Has senior level leadership experience.Application deadlineApplications must be received by close of business, 5pm, on Friday 20th March 2026.Interview and presentation:Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a formal presentation and panel-based interview.
