Offer description

Company: Mercer

What can you expect:

Marsh McLennan Ireland is seeking talented individuals for an exciting opportunity for a permanent Legal Counsel role within its high-performing Legal, Compliance and Public Affairs team.

You will become a member of the Legal Department supporting the Mercer and Marsh businesses in Ireland, working closely with local and regional colleagues in the wider Marsh McLennan business to provide a high-quality and varied legal service.

The role will focus on a wide range of matters including commercial contracting, disputes, project and regulatory work in areas such as financial services, insurance broking, outsourced administration, consulting and trusts. While much of the work is focused on our Irish business, you will also have the opportunity to work on European and global matters.

While you will be a member of a highly supportive and experienced team of 15 colleagues in Ireland (and more than 50 across Europe) this role will suit a lawyer who is excited about taking on responsibility to manage matters independently and interact with colleagues at all levels within the organisation and with our clients.

This role will report to the Chief Counsel, Ireland as part of a team of 15 in Ireland, within a larger European Legal Department.

We will rely on you to:

* Draft and negotiate contracts and other legal documents with clients, vendors and third parties.
* Maintain a docket of active and potential disputes, guide investigations, set case strategy, negotiate settlements, and supervise external counsel.
* Be a strategic legal adviser on projects across the Irish business.
* Actively participate in development of new propositions and projects to respond to regulatory change.
* Provide advice on legal issues and developments, legal risk, relevant regulatory issues as well as policy drafting.
* Support ongoing regulatory initiatives across the business.
* Assist with knowhow, template and self-help tool development for Department and the business.
* Effectively prioritise work and manage time. Communicate regularly with business colleagues and partner with them.
* Escalate key issues for decision or information using appropriate judgement as to when to do so.
* Proactively develop self and educate self on relevant laws and industry themes.

What you will need to have:

Qualifications & Experience

* Holds a current practising certificate from Ireland or other common law jurisdiction.
* Minimum 3+ years’ PQE.
* Strong commercial contracts or disputes experience.

Skills

* Effectively prioritise work by understanding competing priorities and make appropriate judgments regarding relative importance.
* Manage time efficiently; use appropriate judgement in determining how much time to spend on a project or matter.
* Take the initiative; identify areas for enhanced efficiency and issues that go beyond the specific project requested by our business partners.
* Team player and able to work effectively within a small team.

Communications

* Be able to articulate and educate business colleagues on key legal and regulatory issues and developments.
* Use clear language and take a view on legal issues – we are not a team that sits on the fence!
* Able to facilitate and embrace team culture and diversity.

What makes you stand out:

* Experience in Irish Financial Services, Insurance and/or Pensions Law & Regulation would be a bonus but is not necessary.

Why join our team:

* We help you be your best through professional development opportunities, interesting work and supportive leaders.
* We foster a vibrant and inclusive culture where you can collaborate with talented colleagues to create new solutions and have impact for colleagues, clients and communities.
* Our scale enables us to provide a range of career opportunities.
