Role Purpose
The CNM1 provides leadership, coordination, and clinical oversight for the day ward, ensuring safe, efficient, patient‑centred care. The role supports the delivery of high‑quality nursing practice, effective patient flow, and a positive working environment for staff.
Qualifications and Criteria
Be registered in the General Division of the live Register of Nurses kept by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland
Minimum of 3 years post‑registration experience, ideally including day ward, acute surgical and medical care
Have the clinical, managerial, and administrative capacity to discharge the functions of the role properly
Have excellent interpersonal, motivational and communication skills
Demonstrate evidence of continuing learning and professional development
Management or Leadership training
Valid work permission for the Republic of Ireland, or eligibility for a work permit (critical skills)
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership
Provide visible, supportive leadership to nursing and healthcare staff within the day ward
Ensure evidence‑based, high‑quality nursing care aligned with NMBI standards
Oversee assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care
Support safe admission, treatment, and discharge processes to maintain optimal patient flow
Escalate clinical concerns appropriately and promptly
Ensure the provision of a high standard of care to patients and families is consistent with the mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of the Hospital
Demonstrate effective communication skills to ensure safe, coordinated patient care within a fast‑paced Day Ward environment
Promote a culture of open, respectful communication, encouraging staff to escalat
e concerns, share information, and collaborate effectively
Operational Management
Coordinate daily staffing, skill mix, and allocation to meet service needs
Support CNM2 in the effective management, coordination, and development of the day ward service, and step up in their absence to ensure continuity
Support Operations Manager with the effectiveness and efficiency of patient flow
Monitor activity levels, scheduling, waiting times, and throughput to ensure efficient service delivery
Liaise with multidisciplinary teams to support smooth scheduling and timely procedures
Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards
Maintain accurate documentation, promote real‑time documentation, audits, and reporting as required
Manage complaints promptly and professionally, ensuring concerns are addressed, resolved, and escalated in line with hospital policy
Staff Support & Management
Provide supervision, mentorship, and performance support to nursing staff and healthcare staff
Work closely with the Clinical Nurse Facilitators to ensure structured staff development, competency progression, and high‑quality clinical learning
Participate in staff training and ongoing professional development planning
Promote a positive, respectful, and collaborative team culture
Staff induction and orientation of new staff
Make the most effective and efficient use of developments in information technology for both patient care and administrative support in a manner that integrates well with systems throughout the organisation
Participate in training and development in the implementation of EHR Meditech
Quality, Safety & Governance
Participate in clinical audits, incident reporting and reviews, and quality improvement initiatives
Ensure adherence to hospital policies, HIQA & JCI standards
Identify potential safety issues early and escalat
e appropriately
Promote a culture of continuous improvement aligned with HIQA and hospital standards
Health & Safety

Hygiene / Infection Prevention and Control
Monitor infection prevention and control practices across the Day Ward to ensure compliance with hospital policies, AMRIC guidelines, and HIQA standards
Conduct regular audits at ward level
Analyse audit results and communicate findings through safety huddles
Act accordingly by implementing corrective actions through quality improvement initiatives to ensure continuous improvements at ward level
Provide feedback to staff and management, ensuring a positive learning culture
Collaboration with the IPC team
Confidentiality
Protection of patient / service user information in line with hospital policy, NMBI Code of Professional Conduct, GDPR, and HIQA standards
Ensuring staff compliance with confidentiality protocols and reporting breaches appropriately
Maintaining discretion when handling sensitive clinical, personal, and organisational information
Promoting a culture of privacy

Ensure compliance with obligations required by the Data Protection Act 2018
