Health Care Assistant Blarney Rehabilitation Unit (Permanent, Full time) Based at Blarney Rehabilitation Unit and any buildings within the Mercy University Hospital (MUH) Complex Details of Service: Blarney Rehabilitation Unit is a newly developed purpose-built post hospital rehabilitation unit.
It is made up of 50 beds located off site from the MUH.
It remains under the governance of the MUH.
The Rehabilitation Services program delivers specialist post-acute care, focusing on patient-centered reablement to help patients achieve optimal functionality and independence following illness or injury.
This service emphasizes seamless transitions of care between hospital and home, integrating multidisciplinary expertise to support patient recovery.
The post holder will report to the Clinical Nurse Manager 2 of Rehabilitation Services, Assistant Director of Nursing - Nursing Support Services and works under the direction of the Rehabilitation Staff Nurse Responsibilities - The post holder will be responsible for; Assist patients with personal care tasks (bathing, dressing, toileting, oral hygiene) in line with individual care plans.
Support patients with mobility and transfers, using safe manual handling techniques and equipment.
Encourage participation in simple reablement activities under the guidance of nursing and therapy staff.
Prepare patients for nursing or therapy interventions (e.g., positioning for exercises, gathering equipment).
Assist with feeding and hydration, monitoring intake and reporting any issues.
Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming ward environment, ensuring equipment and aids are tidy and functional.
Restock supplies (e.g., toiletries, linen, continence aids) and report shortages.
Build respectful, empathetic relationships with patients and families, providing reassurance and emotional support.
Accurately document care activities and observations in patient records, escalating changes in condition promptly.
Work collaboratively with nurses, therapists, and other team members to deliver cohesive care.
Participate in handovers, team meetings, and training sessions to stay informed of care plans and safety practices.
Adhere to infection control policies, manual handling protocols, and health and safety guidelines.
Comply with confidentiality requirements.
Eligibility Criteria: (a) Candidates must have at the closing date for receipt of applications:
(i) The relevant health skills QQI (formerly FETAC) level 5 qualification.
OR
ii) An equivalent relevant health care qualification or a comparable healthcare qualification as outlined in the Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) NARIC Ireland framework.
Or Be currently employed as a Health Care Assistant or a comparable role.
And (b) Candidates must have the personal competence and capacity to properly discharge the duties of the role.
