LONG-TERM SUBSTITUTE TEACHER: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER [3RD - 5TH GRADE]

REPORTS TO:
Assistant Superintendent for Student Services and Principal at Avoca West Elementary School
SUMMARY
We are excited to welcome a new staff member to Avoca West Elementary School for the month of May - beginning of June **** (with the opportunity to extend the position into the fall of ****) to support our 3rd and 4th grade students in Special Education.
The Special Education Teacher will provide both direct and collaborative support to students with various special education eligibilities and needs.
The teacher will work with a highly skilled team of both general education and special education peers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Skills + Responsibilities
Serve as the primary case manager and educational advocate for students, ensuring their rights and needs are met.
Complete all required special education documentation (IEPs, progress reports, evaluations) in compliance with federal, state, and district guidelines.
Coordinate the development and implementation of the IEP, collaborating with general education teachers, related service providers, parents, and administrators.
Lead and facilitate all mandated special education meetings (initial, annual, re-evaluation), and timely communicate outcomes to the team.
Ensure accurate and timely monitoring of student progress toward IEP goals, reporting progress to parents/guardians at specified intervals.
Collaborate with the IEP team to conduct necessary assessments (e.g., FBAs) and develop appropriate plans (e.g., BIPs) for behavioral needs.
Maintain classroom discipline according to school policies, promoting respectful behavior and responsible work habits.
Demonstrate knowledge of federal and state special education laws (e.g., IDEA).
Ability to monitor and interpret academic and behavioral data for instructional decision-making.
Strong organizational, time management, and communication (written/verbal) skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with all stakeholders: students, parents, administrators, general education teachers, and related service personnel.
Instructional Skills
Engage students interactively, manage the classroom positively, and differentiate instruction for diverse needs.
Strong skills in lesson planning, curriculum development, and using formative/summative assessments.
Provide specialized, differentiated instruction across various service models (inclusion, resource, self-contained) per student IEPs.
Systematically monitor and evaluate progress toward IEP goals and general benchmarks.
Collect, analyze, and interpret academic, behavioral (including BIP), and functional data to inform instruction and programming.
Continuously assess instructional strategies, interventions, and accommodations; adjust programming to maximize student growth.
Collaborate with administration/departments to select appropriate, evidence-based curricula and supplemental interventions.
Interpersonal + Communication Skills
Excellent verbal/written communication, fostering strong relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
Culturally competent, patient, and adaptable to diverse learners.
Provide constructive feedback to students.
Facilitate effective communication and collaboration among all stakeholders (parents, staff, providers, administrators).
Work with staff to consistently implement all aspects of the student's IEP (accommodations, modifications, services).
Coordinate/supervise Instructional Assistants (IAs) supporting caseload students.
Consult general education teachers on instructional strategies, behavior management, and legal compliance.
Actively participate in required team meetings (grade-level, PLC, IEP) and proactively problem-solve academic, behavioral, and social-emotional concerns.
Maintain clear communication with administration/staff regarding potential crises, needed IEP adjustments, or urgent student concerns.
Technology + Innovation
Familiarity with educational technology and digital tools for learning
Ability to integrate multimedia resources (videos, online games, apps) into lessons
Proficiency in using learning management systems (Google Classroom, Canvas, etc.)
Professional + Organizational Skills
Strong organizational and time management skills
Collaboration skills to work with other teachers and school staff
Commitment to professional growth and continuing education
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Prolonged periods of physical activity including: Standing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and walking
Seeing; looking at a computer screen/reading data
Regularly working at assigned site(s)
Some lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 15 lbs.
EDUCATION + EXPERIENCE
Learning Behavior Specialist I (LBS I) endorsement or equivalent
COMPENSATION
Competitive salary commensurate with degree and experience
