Position Purpose / Summary
Responsible for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of automobiles, trucks, specialized construction and maintenance equipment, and other automotive and/or related motorized equipment. Work is performed with considerable supervision in accordance with accepted trade practices adapted to municipal requirements under the general direction of a Foreman who reviews work through inspections for conformance to established departmental standards. No supervision is exercised over other employees.
Essential Functions
Maintains, repairs, and overhauls passenger vehicles, trucks and other specialized municipal construction and maintenance equipment.
Repairs, adjusts, and replaces brakes, transmissions, rear ends, differentials, clutches, axels, cooling systems, shock absorbers, steering boxes, posts, tie rod ends, gears, shafts, cams, drag links, king pins, bushings and bearings.
Determines what parts are needed to repair vehicles and places stock room orders accordingly.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, equipment, and techniques of the trade.
Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of both diesel and gas-powered internal combustion engines.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to locate, diagnose, and correct defects and malfunctions of a variety of automotive and related equipment.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials of the trade.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent, including or supplemented by technical courses relating to the trade.
Three years of experience as a skilled automotive mechanic.
