Legal Secretary/Executive — Coroner's Office (Laois and Carlow)

Job Summary:
The Coroner's Office for Laois and Carlow is seeking a Legal Secretary to provide comprehensive administrative and secretarial support to the Coroner in a sensitive and high-responsibility environment. The successful candidate will work closely with the Coroner to ensure all administrative, legal, and procedural matters relating to inquests and investigations are managed efficiently, accurately, and with discretion.
Key Responsibilities:
* Prepare, manage, and file all documentation relating to Coroner's investigations and inquests, including statements, reports, and legal notices
* Liaise professionally with bereaved families, legal representatives, An Garda Síochána, HSE, and other agencies involved in the inquest process
* Support the Coroner at inquests, including attending hearings, assisting with documentation, and managing case files
* Transcribe statements and evidence from audio recording or dictation, ensuring timeliness and accuracy
* Maintain and update case management systems and confidential records
* Draft, review, and proofread legal correspondence and case reports
* Coordinate scheduling of inquests, interviews, and meetings, and ensure all parties are informed of dates and required documentation
* Ensure compliance with all statutory and regulatory obligations relevant to the Coroner's Office
* Prepare statistical and casework reports as required by the Coroner
* Facilitate communication between the Coroner and external agencies
Key Attributes:
* Minimum two years' experience in a legal environment preferred
* Excellent organisational, administrative, and IT skills
* Absolute discretion and compassion in dealing with sensitive matters
* Ability to prioritise, manage multiple tasks, and work to tight deadlines
* High standard of written and verbal communication
* Proactive attitude and ability to work independently and as part of a small team
* Interest in public service, legal procedures, and regulatory compliance
* Third level qualification in legal, business, or relevant discipline (preferred but not essential)
Additional Details:
* Applicants must be able to reliably commute or plan to relocate to Portlaoise
* Prior legal administrative experience preferable
* Must answer application questions on transcription skills and familiarity with case management systems
