The HSE provides a wide range of community and hospital based mental health services in Ireland and these services have been evolving as we continue to move from a hospital model to providing more care in communities and in clients' own homes. It is estimated that up to one in five of us will experience some mental health problems in our lifetime and in order to meet these needs, Mental Health Services are expanding and evolving.

We are committed to providing progressive high standards of recovery based nursing care to clients with a wide range of mental health issues which range from basic to complex, severe psychiatric care needs. Services include Adult, Psychiatry of Later Life, ID with a Mental Health Diagnosis, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).

The cANP CAMHS Eating Disorders will play a pivotal role in developing and delivering care to children and young people with Eating Disorders.

A key aspect of the planned Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner (RANP) service is assessing, treating and care coordination for individuals who have a diagnosis mental illness in childhood or adolescence and will focus on those with Eating Disorders. The RANP service will commence with cANP recruitment with a specific timeline for establishment of RANP CAMHS Eating Disorder service.

The development and growth of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) provides a rich skill mix with a broad repertoire of knowledge, both experiential and academic, thus enhancing the quality of care and treatment offered to individuals with mental illness and their family/carers. The establishment of an RANP Child & Adolescent Mental Health – Eating Disorders post within the current service is a welcome addition to the team and importantly to the service users.

The RANP Child & Adolescent Mental Health – Eating Disorders when fully implemented within the service will be responsible for a defined caseload of service users diagnosed with Mental Illness and Eating Disorder(s).

The RANP will utilise expertise and higher levels of judgement to support this service user group. The RANP’s caseload will involve utilising advanced levels of knowledge and skills, expert practice, skills autonomy, responsibility and accountability.

The cANP / RANP will work closely with all national policies related to CAMHS and Eating Disorders. The cANP / RANP will support and advise on any agreed national model of care. The cANP/RANP will organise training and monitor implementation of the agreed model of care as appropriate.
