We are entering a period of strategic expansion and are strengthening our commercial team to support our varied and busy pipeline.
The Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to take a leading role in the commercial management of our civil engineering projects nationwide. This is a senior position reporting directly to the Directors, involving both hands-on project commercial control and responsibility for pricing new contracts and tenders.
The ideal candidate will combine strong commercial instincts with a solid understanding of current civil engineering market rates for labour, plant, materials, and subcontract packages. You will play a key part in shaping bid strategies, securing profitable work, and managing the financial performance of projects from tender stage through to final account.
This role offers autonomy, influence, and the opportunity to work closely with an ambitious leadership team within a growing contractor.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial Management
* Manage all commercial aspects of projects from tender submission through to final account
* Prepare, submit, and negotiate monthly valuations and applications for payment
* Oversee subcontract procurement, tender evaluations, and contract administration
* Assess and agree subcontractor payments, variations, and final accounts
* Prepare accurate cost reports, cashflow forecasts, and commercial updates for Directors
Cost Control, Pricing & Reporting
* Lead the pricing of tenders, budgets, and negotiated contracts
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of market rates across civil engineering, including labour, plant and subcontract services
* Prepare, price, and agree variations and claims
* Advise Directors on bid decisions, margins, and commercial strategy
* Monitor project performance against budgets and identify areas for improvement
* Provide early warning on commercial, contractual, or programme risks
Client & Contract Administration
* Ensure full compliance with contract terms (NEC, FIDIC, RIAI or similar)
* Represent ROQ at commercial meetings with clients, consultants, and subcontractors
* Support tendering activities, including measurement, BOQs, take-offs, and pricing inputs
On-site Support & Technical Input
* Conduct regular site visits to assess progress, changes, and commercial risks
* Work closely with Project Managers and Engineers to improve buildability and efficiency
* Provide guidance to ensure value is achieved throughout the delivery process
What We're Looking For
* Minimum 10 years' experience as a Quantity Surveyor/Estimator in the civil engineering sector
* Strong background in earthworks, utilities, drainage, demolition, and general civils
* Experience across renewables, utilities, infrastructure, or commercial civils is an advantage
* Proven experience pricing civil engineering projects and strong insight into market rates
* Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Economics, or Civil Engineering
* Excellent commercial judgment, negotiation skills, and attention to detail
* Confident operating independently and reporting directly to Director level
* Proficiency in Excel, measurement software, and industry reporting tools
* Full driving licence (nationwide travel with some overnights required)
