Job Title: Head of Technical Underwriting

Abrivia are currently recruiting for a Head of Technical Underwriting to join our client in Dublin. This is a senior leadership role responsible for leading underwriting capability, overseeing referral processes and ensuring underwriting activity supports profitable growth while operating within the organisation’s risk appetite and regulatory framework.
Your Role
Lead and develop underwriting teams, fostering a high-performance culture focused on technical capability, collaboration and sound decision‑making
Act as the senior referral point for underwriting decisions across all lines of business, supporting colleagues on complex risks and technical queries
Oversee underwriting standards, governance and quality control, ensuring consistent underwriting practices across the organisation
Support delivery of financial targets by ensuring underwriting discipline aligns with profitability and growth objectives
Drive improvements in underwriting processes and operational efficiency through a continuous improvement approach
Work closely with distribution and leadership teams to strengthen collaboration between underwriting and sales functions
Provide technical direction to underwriting teams, ensuring decisions are aligned with internal guidelines and regulatory requirements
Represent the underwriting function at senior management level and contribute to broader strategic initiatives
Your Skills
Extensive experience in general insurance underwriting with a strong understanding of underwriting principles across property, liability and motor classes
Proven leadership experience managing underwriting teams and developing people within a regulated environment
Strong understanding of underwriting governance, risk appetite and portfolio management principles
Commercially focused with the ability to balance technical discipline with business growth objectives
Excellent communication and influencing skills with the ability to engage effectively with senior stakeholders
Strong analytical and organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
Third level qualification and professional insurance qualification such as ACII or equivalent
