Six Health Regions have been established within the HSE, on the basis of the geographical boundaries agreed by the Government in July 2019 and they will be operational from 2024.
Health Region Overview
Each Health Region will be tasked with population specific planning, resourcing and delivery of health and social care services for the needs of its unique population. This will result in improved accountability and governance in terms of finance and performance, while also bringing decision‑making closer to the frontline.
Health Regions will enable and empower staff to provide services that are:

Integrated, locally planned and delivered
Easier to access and navigate
Available closer to home

The HSE South West health region manages and delivers all public health and social care services in Cork and Kerry, including South / South West Hospital Group and Cork Kerry Community Healthcare. The new structures will continue to transition throughout 2026.
Purpose of the Post
The post of Clinical Nurse Manager 2 (Paediatric Resuscitation and Sepsis Lead) has a pivotal role in service planning, coordinating, and managing activity and resources within the clinical area. The main responsibilities are: quality assurance, resource management, staffing and staff development, practice development, facilitating communication and professional/clinical leadership.
Resuscitation & Sepsis Lead
The CNM2 Paediatric (Resuscitation & Sepsis Lead) will be responsible for improving and building on how the Paediatric Service recognises and manages critically ill children, especially those with life‑threatening infections and emergencies. The role combines clinical leadership, education, governance and quality improvement.
Clinical Leadership

Leading the development and implementation of paediatric resuscitation protocols
Ensuring staff follow evidence‑based guidelines
Supporting teams during complex or high‑risk resuscitation cases
Standardising responses to emergencies such as cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, and septic shock

Improving Early Recognition of Sepsis

Implementing sepsis screening tools and pathways
Promoting sepsis treatment bundles
Ensuring timely antibiotics, fluids, and escalation of care
Monitoring compliance with national or hospital sepsis targets

Education and Training

Organising paediatric resuscitation training
Delivering training sessions for sepsis and cardiac arrest scenarios
Supporting relevant certification courses
Teaching recognition of deteriorating children

Quality Improvement and Clinical Governance

Reviewing paediatric cardiac arrest or severe sepsis cases
Leading mortality and morbidity reviews
Auditing compliance with resuscitation and sepsis protocols
Identifying system issues (delayed antibiotics, poor escalation, etc.)
Implementing improvement projects

Policy Development and Guideline Implementation

Writing and updating local guidelines
Ensuring alignment with national recommendations
Coordinating with relevant hospital committees

Equipment and System Readiness

Paediatric resuscitation trolleys are correctly stocked
Weight‑based drug charts are available
Standardised equipment for different age groups
Readiness for rapid response or paediatric emergency calls

In summary, the Paediatric Resuscitation and Sepsis Lead ensures that every child who deteriorates is recognised quickly and receives rapid, evidence‑based emergency treatment, while also improving the systems, training, and governance that support this care.
