Staff Nurse – Recovery (Fixed Term Maternity Cover)

Overview of role
UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic is recruiting a Staff Nurse for the Recovery department in Theatre. This is a full‑time fixed‑term role for 11 months covering maternity leave.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The position reports to the CNM 1 and Recovery/Theatre Manager, and the Director of Nursing.
The Recovery Nurse is responsible for providing, maintaining and developing patient‑centred care to a high standard. This includes:
* Providing high‑standard nursing care to patients in pre‑operative and post‑operative areas.
* Communicating with patients, relatives and visitors as required.
* Setting and monitoring standards, and participating in the clinic's accreditation programme.
* Keeping the Director of Nursing apprised of all issues.
* Liaising with the Director of Nursing to ensure efficient use of patient‑care consumables.
Administrative Responsibilities
* Liaising with the Director of Nursing, Clinical Nurse Managers and support staff to develop a high‑quality service.
* Planning future service developments for the department.
* Ensuring continuity of nursing care and safe patient transfer.
* Promoting a conducive learning environment for staff retention.
* Adhering to health and safety, fire and statutory regulations.
* Managing change and facilitating necessary departmental changes.
* Ensuring safe transfer of patients to Day Ward and In‑Patient wards.
* Maintaining safe custody of controlled drugs.
* Co‑ordinating equipment usage to prevent unnecessary expenditure.
* Documenting incidents and near misses as per policy.
* Contributing to audit activities related to quality care and nursing standards.
* Attending mandatory in‑service training.
* Monitoring infection control policies and coordinating with Infection Control Nurse.
* Ensuring Health & Safety standards are enforced.
* Using knowledge and judgement to manage crisis situations.
* Upholding daily cleaning standards and reporting inadequacies.
Qualifications & Experience
* Registered General Nurse, registered with An Bord Altranais on the live register.
* Minimum 4 years post‑registration experience, with at least 3 years in theatre/recovery.
* Orthopaedic experience desirable.
* Opportunity to train in specialist disciplines such as Orthopaedics.
* Experience managing a team of nurses, particularly in an orthopaedic facility.
* Computer literate, excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to work independently, prioritise and manage multiple issues with attention to detail.
* Free from any defect or disease that would render unsuitable for office and capable of regular efficient service.
* Good character.
* Garda Vetting is required.
