Environmental Health & Safety Lead
* This key role supports the EHS Manager in delivering all aspects of EHS across a food manufacturing site. The role involves leading day-to-day management of EHS operations and managing two team members.
* You will ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, oversee a proactive safety culture, and support continuous improvement initiatives to protect people, property, and the environment.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead daily operations of the EHS department, including direct oversight in the absence of the EHS Manager.
* Review and update risk assessments, safe operating procedures, work instructions, and the site’s safety statement regularly.
* Monitor and analyze incident reports and safety metrics; compile and present daily performance statistics to the operations team.
* Investigate and document accidents, incidents, and near misses promptly.
* Assist managers in developing and implementing corrective actions.
* Manage the internal audit program, conduct safety inspections, generate reports, and coordinate with departments to ensure timely closure of findings.
* Identify opportunities for safety performance improvement and support site-wide EHS initiatives in collaboration with the EHS Manager.
* Assist in preparing for external regulatory and compliance audits.
* Coordinate safety-related training, ensuring all mandatory and ongoing training needs are met on schedule.
* Maintain and update the training matrix.
* Create and deliver EHS communications, including toolbox talks and safety alerts, to promote a strong safety culture.
* Manage site emergency preparedness programs, including fire safety, chemical safety, and workplace vehicle protocols.
* Oversee contractor safety in partnership with the engineering department, including delivering contractor training, reviewing documentation, and conducting activity audits.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:
Essential Skills:
* Excellent oral and written communication skills to clearly explain safety procedures at all levels.
* Experience managing a team.
* Ability to start effectively without extensive onboarding.
* Level 8 qualification in H&S or a related discipline.
* 1–3 years’ experience in a manufacturing or high-risk environment.
* Manual Handling Instructor certification.
* Train the Trainer qualification.
* Occupational First Aid certification.
* Strong attention to detail, with excellent administrative, reporting, and literacy skills.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office and EHS-related software platforms.
* Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Willingness to undertake some travel.
