CBPDPD01 Consultant General Paediatrician Mayo University Hospital for 37 hours per week
This is an appointment to the HSE West & North West Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Mayo University Hospital for 37 hours per week. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.
Main Duties of the Job
Respiratory illness is the commonest reason for admission of children to hospital. Asthma as a respiratory diagnosis is the commonest respiratory condition in the paediatric population and continues to rise steadily.
This is a replacement post. The purpose of the post is to address the need to provide general and specialty paediatric care for children and young people, including newborns, presenting through scheduled care and unscheduled care pathways.
Operational:
Delivering safe, efficient and evidence based care to scheduled and unscheduled care cohorts of paediatric patients attending MUH and community clinics and overseeing safe care delivery by paediatric junior doctors.
Participation in training program for junior doctors and medical students.
Participating in simulated training, skills and drills in both neonatal and paediatrics.
Participation in activities relating to Quality Improvement and Patient Safety issues arising.
Strategic:
Development of Practice guidelines for respiratory and general paediatric care delivery and development of both services as per ‘hub & spoke’ model appropriate to a level 2 unit.
Development of stronger integrated care pathways for children and young people, including transition, to enhance patient care and shared care.

Information about the organisation
Currently, there is 1 General Paediatrician, with dual training in neonatology. There are 4 other WTE in paediatrics (1 Gen Paediatrics + Respiratory/CF, 1 Gen Paediatrics + Diabetes, 1 General Paediatrics + Community Child Health), 1 general paediatrics + allergy
MUH Paediatric service current composition:
Secondary care paediatric care provision to local population (total no. of juv in Mayo + parts of Roscommon, south Sligo, north Galway)
Inpatient beds on paediatric ward - 28.
Paediatric Decision Unit- PDU This incorporates 6 bedded ambulatory care unit which offers an unscheduled care service (4000 juveniles attendance per year) + scheduled care service (1000 paediatric assessments per year)
Outpatient clinics per month -43. Asthma, Constipation, Cystic Fibrosis, Diabetes, complex care clinic (ADHD) and General Paediatric. Outreach clinic services are provided to Ballina and Belmullet Hospitals twice per month.
Community Paediatric clinics: Down Syndrome / Early Intervention / School Age Community Clinic / Complex Care / Autism / ADHD.

The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st February 2026
The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.
The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
