Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, is the independent civilian oversight body for An Garda Síochána, the Irish police service. On 2 April 2025 the President appointed Dr Emily Logan as Ireland's first Police Ombudsman. Fiosrú continues the work of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission in handling complaints from members of the public about Gardaí. Established by the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act, 2024 Fiosrú has enhanced powers to promote public confidence in policing oversight by processing complaints and investigations in a timely, efficient and effective manner, and in accordance with fair procedures.

Role Description

Fiosrú, Office of the Police Ombudsman, is recruiting
Investigations Officers
(Higher Executive Officer) for its Cork office. This role will play a key role in Fiosrú by ensuring that An Garda Síochána complaints are investigated with fairness, transparency, and public accountability.

Investigations Officers report to a Senior Investigations Officer in Fiosrú and perform a central role in conducting independent investigations into complaints against An Garda Síochána. Investigations Officers have, for the purpose of an investigation, the same powers, immunities and privileges conferred as members of An Garda Síochána. They are expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and human rights. Candidates must demonstrate or develop a strong understanding of the Irish justice system and the broader law enforcement environment in which Fiosrú operates.

Main Duties

* Investigate criminal and disciplinary complaints;
* Support Senior Investigations Officers as part of an investigative team;
* Take witness statements, conduct interviews, and prepare reports;
* Attend incident scenes, preserve and recover evidence;
* Participate in court, misconduct, and coronial proceedings;
* Supervise and guide Assistant Investigations Officers;
* Recommend actions based on legal advice;
* Identify opportunities for improving investigative processes.

Essential Requirements

* Minimum 5 years' relevant investigative experience;
* Management experience, including team leadership or significant project contribution;
* Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills;
* Proven organisational skills to meet team objectives within deadlines;
* Effective teamwork in multidisciplinary environments;
* Excellent oral and written communication skills in English;
* Strong interpersonal skills, confidence, and resilience in sensitive situations;
* Technical report writing and IT proficiency;
* Full Category B manual driving licence.
