The ICU NOCA Audit Nurse is a specialized role focused on the collection, validation, and submission of clinical data to the National Office of Clinical Audit (NOCA), specifically for the Irish National ICU Audit (INICUA). This role bridges the gap between frontline critical care and national healthcare standards. You will ensure that every patient journey through the ICU is accurately reflected in national datasets, driving quality improvement, benchmarking hospital performance, and ultimately enhancing patient outcomes through data-driven insights. Your work ensures our unit meets international benchmarks and provides the safest possible care to our most vulnerable patients.\" Key Responsibilities and Deliverables 1.Data Management & Submission Demonstrate a strong willingness to develop expertise in the NOCA ICU audit framework, criteria, and submission process. With the support of Beacon ICU and PSQI teams Implement NOCA / ICU audit in Beacon Hospital Identify all eligible ICU/HDU admissions for inclusion in the NOCA National ICU Audit. Abstract complex clinical data from electronic health records (EHR) and paper charts, including physiological parameters, comorbidities, and treatment interventions. Calculate and validate severity-of-illness scores (e.g., APACHE II, SAPS II). Ensure timely and accurate data entry into the NOCA audit portal, adhering to strict national deadlines. 2. Quality Assurance & Reporting Perform regular data quality checks to ensure consistency, completeness, and accuracy. Analyse quarterly and annual NOCA reports to identify trends, outliers, or areas for clinical improvement. Present audit findings to the ICU Departmental meetings, ICU working group meeting and wider hospital committee including QIC. Promote Beacon Hospital as a NOCA ICU site, including internal and external dissemination activities social medica updates, GP, external referrers and insurance partner presentations. 3. Clinical Liaison & Education Act as the primary point of contact between the hospital and the NOCA national office. Educate ICU staff on the importance of accurate clinical documentation and its impact on audit data. Collaborate with Intensivists and ICU Managers to implement change based on audit recommendations. 4. Professional Development Maintain clinical competency in Intensive Care nursing to ensure data abstraction remains contextually accurate. Attend national NOCA workshops, seminars, and training sessions. Person Specification Domain ;Essential Criteria/Desirable Criteria Qualification Registered General Nurse (RGN) with NMBI Nursing Preceptorship course Postgraduate diploma in Intensive Care Nursing Experience Minimum 35 years of recent clinical experience in a Level 3 ICU Experience in clinical audit, research and data management Mentorship of junior staff Previous critical care audit for NOCA Job Specific Knowledge and Skills Technical Skills: High level of computer literacy (MS Office, ICU Clinical Systems / ICCA). Knowledge: Deep understanding of ICU physiology, sepsis protocols, and organ support. Familiarity with patient observations charts and ICCA Familiarity with Data Protection Act Familiarity with Audit and Quality Improvement Core Competencies: Attention to Detail: Ability to spot minute discrepancies in complex clinical datasets. Analytical Thinking: Translating raw numbers into actionable clinical insights. Communication: Comfortably presenting data to hospital management, senior consultants and nursing leadership. Autonomy: Capable of managing a heavy workload and meeting national reporting deadlines with minimal supervision.
