Galway. We also have an in-house sheet metal fabrication department servicing a range of customers. We specialise in delivering high-quality, bespoke vehicle solutions for fire and rescue, public sector, and specialist applications. As we continue to expand, we are seeking a Design Engineering Manager to lead our design and engineering functions. Role Overview The Design Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and managing all design and engineering activities within Sdhen Teo. This includes overseeing the design and development of new vehicle builds, refurbishment projects, and bespoke engineering solutions, ensuring that all outputs meet the highest standards of safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness. It also includes supporting the Engineering Director in the preparation of final design and pricing within the sheet metal fabrication section when required.This is a highly visible working manager position that will plan, direct and co-ordinate the activities within the engineering and manufacturing departments. The Engineer will assign and delegate responsibility for projects, give work directions, resolve problems, prepare schedules, and set deadlines to ensure timely completion. Key Responsibilities Lead the design and development of vehicle layouts, structural elements, and component systems using CAD and engineering software. Collaborate with customers, suppliers, and internal teams to convert technical requirements into practical, build-ready designs. Oversee the creation of accurate BOMs, drawings, and design documentation to support manufacturing. Drive the integration of Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles and Lean practices throughout the design and manufacturing process. Manage all technical aspects of the manufacturing process, assisting with technical queries and problem solving. Manage and mentor the engineering and design team, setting clear goals, development plans, and performance expectations. Ensure all designs comply with relevant safety standards, certification requirements, and regulatory obligations. Support continuous improvement in design processes, cost optimisation, and material selection. Work cross-functionally with Production, Purchasing, and Maintenance teams to align engineering output with operational capabilities. Participate in project cost reviews, timeline planning, and quality assurance reviews with senior management. Qualifications & Experience Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Product Design, or a related discipline. Minimum 5+ years experience in a design or manufacturing engineering role, ideally within automotive, fabrication, or heavy vehicle sectors. Proven leadership experience managing technical teams. Strong proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar). Understanding of vehicle systems, sheet metal design, and structural fabrication. Experience with Lean manufacturing principles and design cost control. Familiarity with ERP systems (e.g. Sage) and BOM creation is an advantage.
