An experienced
Principal Scientist
is required to provide technical leadership in polymer materials development within a medical device R&D environment. This role focuses on the
selection, optimisation, and development of polymer materials
used in extrusion, heat-sealing, casting, blowing, and injection/insert moulding processes. The position is highly cross-functional and involves collaboration with engineering, quality, clinical, and manufacturing teams, as well as mentoring and coaching colleagues.
This is a laboratory-based, on-site role requiring strong experimental, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities. The successful candidate will lead material innovation initiatives, support product development programmes, and play a key role in scaling technologies from lab to production.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the sourcing, design, development, and optimisation of polymer formulations for extrusion and moulding applications
* Conduct and oversee research to improve material performance, durability, and stability
* Develop and execute experimental plans, including formulation trials and material performance testing
* Provide technical leadership in material, process, and equipment selection
* Support cross-functional product development and root cause investigations
* Engage with suppliers and external partners on material and technology development
* Stay current with emerging trends in polymer and materials science
* Generate technical documentation, reports, and intellectual property
* Ensure compliance with regulatory and quality requirements
Experience & Education Requirements
* PhD
in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field
* 10+ years' experience
in polymer R&D and manufacturing environments
* Proven leadership on technical or scientific projects
Technical Expertise
* Strong knowledge of polymer formulations, adhesives, and material chemistry
* Experience with extrusion, heat-sealing, casting, blowing, and injection/insert moulding
* Ability to design and execute complex experiments and interpret data
* Experience scaling technologies from laboratory to pilot and full production
* Strong analytical, structured problem-solving, and innovation skills
* Experience mentoring and providing technical guidance
* Understanding of industry trends, market needs, and new technologies
