Theatre Anaesthetic Recovery Nurse – UPMC Whitfield Hospital
Join UPMC Ireland as a Theatre Anaesthetic Recovery Nurse. This permanent, 30‑hour per week role supports a wide range of specialties—orthopaedic, general, ophthalmology, gynae, ENT, pain management, urology and vascular theatre procedures and provides assistance to anaesthetic and PACU teams. The position is based at UPMC Whitfield Hospital, Waterford.
Role Overview
UPMC Whitfield is recruiting a Theatre Anaesthetic Recovery Nurse to assist across multiple specialties and develop specialist knowledge of nursing practice within the theatre environment.
Responsibilities
* Ensure the delivery of the highest possible standard of care to all patients.
* Act as preceptor to pre‑registration students, mentor new clinical staff and non‑clinical staff, supporting and guiding colleagues when needed.
* Liaise with affiliated nurse education departments and develop UPMC Whitfield Hospital as a recognised learning environment for student nurses.
* Develop and maintain effective communication and interpersonal relationships with all members of the multi‑disciplinary team to ensure a collaborative working practice.
* Support the clinical nurse manager by meeting agreed responsibilities set out by the Assistant Director of Nursing or the Director of Nursing at any time.
* Identify and discuss nursing/patient needs with consultants/nursing team, multidisciplinary team, patients and carers.
* Maintain the highest possible standards of patient care and patient safety at all times.
* Maintain high standards of written and verbal communication, using NMBI publications including the Scope of Practice Framework and Code of Professional Misconduct.
* Maintain own professional registration and submit to HR for yearly verification.
* Develop and maintain a high level of knowledge of:
o Clinical risk reporting policy
o Occupational Health
o Facilities Management
o Patient Moving and Handling
o Resuscitation / Basic Life Support
o Health and Safety
* Undertake a proactive approach to achieving and maintaining accreditation standards within UPMC Whitfield Hospital, including knowledge of departmental and hospital‑wide policies.
* Participate and lead in clinical audit and research, promoting evidence‑based practice and preparing written reports for local audits and accreditation.
* Work closely with the Quality and Patient Safety team to meet accreditation standards.
* Uphold hospital policy requirements for Fire, Infection Control, Radiation Safety, and Health and Safety at work, attending required updates.
* Identify potential risks for staff, patients and visitors, and adhere to incident reporting procedures.
* Observe a general duty of care for the health, safety and well‑being of self, colleagues, visitors and patients.
* Act as shift co‑ordinator / Team Leader, assessing workload allocation to maintain patient and staff safety.
* Manage workload to ensure patient care needs are met, allowing adequate breaks for staff.
* Develop IT skills for efficient clinical work, including knowledge of Isoft.
* Continuously risk‑assess the theatre environment and report incidents or complaints according to UPMC Whitfield Hospital guidelines.
* Demonstrate research‑based nursing care and maintain personal and professional development.
* Undertake specific training required to perform the role (e.g., use of equipment, administration of specialist medication).
* Maintain confidentiality of patient and staff information, adhering to legal and organisational policies.
Qualifications & Experience
* Registered Nurse in the general division of the Register of Nurses maintained by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
* Basic Life Support Training.
* Hold a Theatre Qualification (desirable).
* Demonstrated evidence of Theatre Nursing experience.
Competencies and Knowledge
* Knowledge of Infection Control, Quality and Risk Management, Health & Safety within the hospital setting.
* Ability to attend mandatory education sessions promptly and maintain a professional portfolio.
* Positive professional persona reflecting the nursing profession and UPMC values, with effective time management skills.
* Quick action to address urgent matters.
