About The Role

Do you enjoy balancing technical fieldwork with meaningful ecological impact? Are you ready to lead surveys, mentor early-career colleagues, and deliver high-quality reports? Looking for a role that offers variety, autonomy, and the chance to shape your ecological career?

We’re looking for a Senior Ecologist to join Woodrow (part of the APEM Group) in Ireland. This is an exciting opportunity to take the next step in your consultancy career—delivering high-quality ecological assessments, leading fieldwork across diverse Irish habitats, and contributing to nationally significant environmental projects.

You’ll have the flexibility to work from one of our core offices in Sligo, Dublin, Galway or Cork, or remotely/hybrid from elsewhere in Ireland. Around 50% of your time will involve fieldwork, including travel across Ireland (and occasionally Northern Ireland or the UK), so confidence working in dynamic, outdoor settings is key.

As a Senior Ecologist, you’ll lead survey programmes, deliver technical reports (e.g. EcIA, AA Screening, NIS, EIAR), manage small to mid-sized projects, and guide junior ecologists. You’ll also have opportunities to contribute to tender writing, service development, and cross-disciplinary collaboration with experts across the wider APEM Group.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

* A third-level qualification in Ecology, Environmental Science, Zoology, Botany, or a related field
* 3–5+ years of experience in ecological consultancy or similar
* Strong field survey skills and working knowledge of Irish flora and fauna
* Experience producing ecological impact assessments and technical reports aligned with Irish planning law
* A good understanding of Irish and EU legislation (Habitats Directive, Birds Directive, Planning and Development Act)
* Excellent communication skills—both written and verbal
* Ability to manage projects independently, including budgets, schedules, and client relationships
* A full clean EU driving licence and willingness to travel for fieldwork

Bonus points for:

* CIEEM Associate Membership (or eligibility), and interest in progressing toward Full Membership or Chartership
* Experience managing field teams and mentoring junior staff
* Familiarity with GIS tools (QGIS, ArcGIS)
* First Aid or remote fieldwork safety training (training can be provided)

This is a fantastic role for someone who thrives in the field, enjoys varied project work, and wants to make a tangible contribution to Ireland’s ecological future. It also offers a clear development path toward Principal Ecologist level, supported by a collaborative and expert team.

You will be offered the chance to work on a variety of projects, many of our employees have worked on projects that have been of personal interest to them. We match this with a commitment to continuous development and learning to support your career. We also offer benefits to look after you, from private medical insurance for all employees, access to mental health first aiders and comprehensive income protection if you cannot work. We also offer superb flexible working options, balancing work with your life.

Next steps

We are focused on creating a diverse and inclusive team. If you can’t tick every box on our job description, then we are still keen to hear from you and are open to supporting your development. That may be working part time or supporting you to gain experience in a specific area – we are a growing company and are able to adapt roles to reflect individual skills.

If you think you have what it takes to join our fast-growing business, then please apply immediately on our website. All we need some basic information and your CV, we will review all applications quickly and will respond to all applications.
