Associate Practitioner

Job Title: Associate Practitioner

Reports to: Chief Medical Scientist

Location: Histopathology Laboratory


Job Purpose:

To participate in providing a quality service to the Pathology department. The fundamental philosophy guiding this position is to promote and preserve the Bon Secours Mission, Values and Ethos.


Details of role:

* Permanent full-time role
* 35 hours per week
* Salary in line with experience
1. Perform routine laboratory scientific work to the highest standard in accordance with the Laboratory's policies, procedures, and guidelines.
2. Be responsible to the Chief MS for delivering quality work and carrying out duties in accordance with departmental procedures.
3. Assist Medical Scientists and MLA staff with the preparation work.
4. Ordering of tests on the laboratory information system (Order Entry).
5. Processing samples for external test requests and packaging in accordance with the policies, procedures, and guidelines of the laboratory.
6. Receive and record specimens, ensuring that samples and request forms are correctly matched.
7. Safe operation and maintenance of complex equipment.
8. Embedding and microtomy of patient tissue (following training and competency assessment).
9. Following training and competency assessment carry out biopsy transfer.
10. Traying-up of patient slides in accordance with standard operating procedures.
11. Recognising limits of practice and referring to Medical Scientists as required.
12. Participate as required in the registration, custody, and stock level of the laboratory reagents and other consumables.
13. Receive and record details concerning non-conformances, complaints, and defects in supplies and equipment, investigate the circumstances with the appropriate team members, take the necessary corrective action, and report the findings in line with the Pathology Department's quality management system.
14. Adhere to Laboratory standard operating procedures on document control and retention of records.
15. Assist the Clinical Director of Pathology, Consultant Pathologist, Laboratory Manager, Chief Medical Scientist, and Senior Medical Scientists and other relevant staff in ensuring compliance with ISO15189, international and national guidelines and standards for the provision of service and actively participate in internal quality control and external quality assessment.
16. Participate in the Hospital Performance Review and Development system in order that performance can be assessed and identify development needs.
17. Adhere to quality standards and ensuring a quality service is provided at all times.
18. The post holder may be required to perform other duties as appropriate to the post and to contribute to the development of the post whilst in office.
19. Actively and positively support the Hospital in its quest to gain and maintain JCI and ISO15189 Standard Accreditation and any other best practice standards or guidelines that may apply to diagnostic laboratories.
20. Perform tasks and duties in a manner that ensures compliance with relevant regulations including the Blood Directive 2002/98/EC and the Medical Devices Directives 93/42/EC and 98/79/EC, where applicable.
21. Complete assigned actions, including those required in the close-out of non-conformances, change control, and complaints, in a timely manner.
22. Participate in ensuring that effective safety procedures are in place to comply with health and safety regulations, ensuring safe working practices and a safe working environment.


Essential Qualifications:

* BSc in Biological Science, General Science, Biology or equivalent.


Desirable Qualifications:

* Post-graduate studies in a related field.


Essential Experience:

* Previous experience working in a laboratory environment.


Desirable Experience:

* Experience of working in an ISO15189-accredited medical laboratory.


Knowledge and Skills:

* Ability to work on own initiative.
* Team player.
* Good communication skills.
