OverviewCork City Council - Comhairle Cathrach Chorcaí is seeking an Executive Scientist within the Waste Management & Environment Section, reporting to the Senior Executive Engineer. The role supports the implementation of national and local policy, including the Cork City Corporate Plan, the Cork City Climate Action Plan, and the Waste Management Plan for a Circular Economy, to deliver Cork City Council’s environmental objectives. The post holder will be part of a dedicated team responsible for environmental compliance and enforcement. The role requires strong technical expertise, knowledge of environmental legislation and policies, and an understanding of local authority services, stakeholder relationships, and the democratic mandate of local government. Flexibility is essential, as duties may on occasion involve working outside normal office hours. The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative, a consistently high standard of work, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Responsibilities
Deliver environmental objectives by implementing national and local policy and plans in alignment with Cork City Council strategies.
Contribute to environmental compliance and enforcement as part of the Waste Management & Environment team.
Work under the direction of the Senior Executive Engineer and collaborate with stakeholders across services and departments.
Apply strong technical expertise and knowledge of environmental legislation, policies, and plans relevant to local government.
Maintain awareness of current issues, future trends, and the strategic direction of the sector.
Demonstrate flexibility to work outside normal hours when required and show initiative, aiming for high-quality outcomes.
Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills to engage with internal teams and external stakeholders.
Qualifications / Experience
Strong technical expertise in relevant environmental disciplines and a sound knowledge of environmental legislation and local government processes.
Understanding of the structure, governance, and democratic mandate of local government and the ability to navigate stakeholder relationships.
Awareness of current environmental issues, future trends, and the strategic direction of the sector.
Flexibility to adapt to changing duties, with effective communication and collaboration skills.
