Organisation Description:

The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of Ireland's 220-million-acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The Institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners.

Summary of the Role:

There are a number of priority elements to the role of Scientific and Technical Officer (STO) as it relates to the important role the Marine Institute plays in the provision of scientific advice to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, in particular, as it relates to the support of licensing of aquaculture activities in the marine environment.

The successful candidate will support aquaculture advisory services within the Aquaculture Advice and Benthos Ecology Team. Key responsibilities include preparing Appropriate Assessment (AA) reports and screenings for aquaculture activities in Natura 2000 sites, producing related environmental assessments, and reviewing scientific reports for accuracy and robustness. The role also involves data collation, mapping, and contributing to risk assessments, management recommendations, and monitoring programmes. A strong understanding of marine aquaculture's environmental impacts and commitment to improving AA processes is essential.
