No: 2026/002 Staff Grade Medical Scientist Histopathology Permanent Full Time The Histopathology Department of The Rotunda hospital has a vacancy for a Staff Grade Medical Scientist to join our team. The successful candidate will play a vital role in many aspects of providing a diagnostic histopathology service. Interested and qualified staff rotate through most areas of the histology lab and also participate in areas such as quality, training, and histodissection. Flexible / part-time working conditions may be available, depending on the successful candidates experience & competency as well as service requirements. The hospital campus is located in Dublin city center and is well served by all modes of public transport. The Histopathology Department provides an evolving routine histology service (cut-up, processing, embedding, FFPE microtomy, cryomicrotomy, H&E IHC and some histochemical staining). The histopathology Laboratory is currently located in the main hospital campus on Parnell Square (this may change throughout the tenure of the post holder). The Histology Department of the Rotunda Hospital Dublin provides a Gynecological, Obstetric and Perinatal anatomical pathology service to the Rotunda Hospital. The Rotunda Hospital Colposcopy unit is the only Colposcopy unit providing services to the National Cervical Cancer Screening Service on the north side of Dublin. The Rotunda also has a busy benign gynaecology hub. The department provides perinatal anatomical pathology service to the regions of North Dublin, Louth and Cavan. The Rotunda Hospital Dublin is the oldest continually operating maternity hospital in the world. It is now a large tertiary referral unit, delivering 8500 to 9000 women per annum. The Department of Laboratory Medicine in the Rotunda Hospital was established in 1902 and has been delivering a comprehensive Pathology service ever since. It is accredited to the ISO15189 standard. Eligibility Criteria: Qualifications and/ or experience: 1. Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc (a) Candidates for appointment must: (i)Meet the requirements of HSE Eligibility Criteria for Medical Scientist grade code 3875. OR (ii)Trainee / Student Medical Scientists who are on a CORU recognised course, have previous experience in an INAB ISO15189 histopathology accredited laboratory, and who have completed their clinical placements & are expected to graduate, will be considered (confirmation of progression on a course to the clinical placement stage will be required prior to commencement). Permanent appointment/employment will be subject to the candidate attaining registration as a Medical Scientist. AND (b) Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of dexterity, suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office. 2. Annual registration (i)On appointment, practitioners must maintain annual registration on the Medical Scientists Register, maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board of CORU AND (ii) Practitioners must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC) Qualifications Please see above eligibility criteria for professional qualifications & experience required as per Health Service Executive. CORU registration as a Medical Scientist will be essential for permanent appointment. Desirable Post graduate level studies in which the science of Histopathology was studied. Experience Supervised Clinical Placement in a Clinical Pathology Laboratory that meets CORUs requirements for Medical Scientists. Desirable Experience in an ISO15189 accredited laboratory Experience in a diagnostic histopathology laboratory Experience in a pathology laboratory with Gynaecological, Obstetric and/or perinatal pathology Skills/Abilities Demonstrate the ability to participate in and contribute to the Histology laboratory team. Excellent team player Have excellent interpersonal skills and a high capacity for responsibility and individual initiative. Excellent organisational and communication skills Ability to react appropriately in unusual situations Possess the manual dexterity to complete the analytical work of a Histology Lab The ability to take up the position and commence employment rapidly Desirable Competence in histology embedding, microtomy and staining of tissue. Demonstrate adaptability to the rapid changes taking place in the health services (especially through a personal, reflective CPD record as per CORU requirements). Knowledge & Understanding Be aware of issues involved in the provision of a modern histology service. Understand quality control criteria Be familiar with the accreditation criteria and objectives of INAB ISO 15189. Desirable Be familiar with laboratory information systems. Be familiar with current health and safety legislation as it pertains to the laboratory Familiarity with gynaecological, obstetric and perinatal anatomical pathology. Caring attributes Must possess caring and empathetic qualities and demonstrate these attributes in the course of employment. Demonstrated patient focus Principal Duties and Responsibilities General 1.Maintain awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all hospital activities 2.Participate in implementing a clinical laboratory service that supports the clinical needs of our patients 3.Participate in training as required attending, completing, implementing & providing 4.Participate in the implementation of operational processes to the standards of best practice 5.Participate in the implementation of a quality management programme that is patient centred 6.Achieve and/or maintain professional registration, including by participation in (and promotion of) continuing education and research activities consistent with the position 7.Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values & strategy of the hospital 8.Comply with relevant procedures, methods and quality standards/policies. Specific 9.Consistently perform all work to the highest professional standards, as determined by theChief Medical Scientist. 10.Take all reasonable measures to respect and protect the integrity of patient specimens 11. Be responsible for the quality of their work and carry out their duties in accordance with laboratory policy 12. Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient and hospital information 13. Participation is encouraged in out-of-hours laboratory rosters. 14. In co-operation with the Chief Medical Scientist and other designated senior staff, participate in the introduction of new ideas and methods 15. Participate as required in the registration and stock level management of laboratory reagents and materials 16. Record and report details of mishaps, complaints and defects in supplies and equipment, investigate the circumstances with appropriate team members and take the necessary action and report findings as required, and as determined by the Chief Medical Scientist 17. Actively participate in service changes and improvements, as required by the Chief medical Scientist 18. Participate and assist in carrying out the Major Emergency Plan for isolated incidents and multiple trauma according to the Laboratory Management Team policy 19. Ensure, their work is in compliance with International and National Guidelines & standards of provision of Laboratory Services 20. Make the most effective and efficient use of information technology for both patient care and administrative support Any other duties deemed appropriate to the post.
