Job Title: Electrical Designer
Overview
A well-established engineering and manufacturing organisation supporting highly regulated process industries is seeking an Electrical Designer to join its growing team. The company delivers end-to-end solutions, including design, fabrication, installation, and lifecycle support for complex processing systems used in advanced manufacturing environments. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to technically challenging projects at both pilot and commercial scale.
Role Summary
Reporting to the Electrical Design Lead, the Electrical Designer will be responsible for producing detailed electrical designs and documentation for engineered systems. The role involves developing schematics, panel layouts, and associated bills of materials, while ensuring compliance with industry standards and project specifications. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver integrated system designs.
Key Responsibilities
Develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts for control systems
Design and specify PLC and DCS-based control systems and associated control loops
Create motor control and variable frequency drive (VFD) designs
Produce layout and wiring designs for control panels, power distribution systems, and remote I/O panels
Design and document instrumentation and control device installation based on P&IDs, I/O lists, and specifications
Generate and maintain bills of materials within ERP systems
Prepare conduit schedules and installation documentation
Participate in design reviews and collaborate with engineering and project teams
Support manufacturing, commissioning, and field service activities as required
Ensure designs comply with relevant codes, standards, and regulatory requirements
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering function
Provide technical support during project execution and start-up phases
Travel occasionally in support of project delivery
Qualifications & Skills
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel)
Experience with ERP systems for materials and BOM management
Solid understanding of electrical drafting standards and design principles
High attention to detail with a focus on compliance and quality
Effective communication and organisational skills
Ability to work both independently and within cross-functional teams
Preferred Experience
Technical qualification in Electrical Engineering, CAD/Drafting, or a related discipline
Experience with industrial control systems and electrical design (2+ years preferred)
Familiarity with PLC/DCS platforms (e.g. major industry vendors)
Knowledge of process control systems, instrumentation, and motor control design
Ability to interpret and work from P&IDs
Experience using electrical design software such as EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar tools
Exposure to 3D design tools (e.g. Inventor or equivalent)
Experience with panel design, assembly, and wiring practices
Understanding of continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma advantageous)
