Junior Security Engineer – Role OverviewAJunior Security Engineeris an entry-level position in the field of cybersecurity, responsible for assisting in the protection of an organization's IT infrastructure, networks, and systems from cyber threats. This role typically supports senior security engineers and other IT teams in monitoring, implementing, and maintaining security measures to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of sensitive data and systems. Junior Security Engineers are involved in the day-to-day activities of cybersecurity, including threat detection, vulnerability assessments, incident response, and risk management.The position is a stepping stone for those looking to build a career in cybersecurity, providing opportunities for growth and specialization in areas such as penetration testing, security operations, or network security.Key Responsibilities:Monitoring & Threat Detection:Assist in monitoring network traffic, system logs, and security alerts to detect potential security incidents.Use security tools (e.g., SIEM systems, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS)) to track and investigate suspicious activity.Participate in the identification of vulnerabilities and threats, and escalate issues to senior team members when necessary.Incident Response & Investigation:Assist in responding to security incidents, including analyzing the scope of breaches and identifying the root cause.Support the process of incident containment, eradication, and recovery under the guidance of more senior security engineers.Help collect forensic evidence and document incidents for further analysis and reporting.Vulnerability Management:Assist in vulnerability assessments and regular security scanning to identify weaknesses in systems, networks, and applications.Collaborate with IT teams to prioritize and remediate security vulnerabilities based on risk.Help apply patches, updates, and security configurations to prevent vulnerabilities from being exploited.Security Policy & Compliance:Help enforce and maintain security policies, guidelines, and best practices within the organization.Ensure that systems, networks, and applications comply with relevant security standards and regulatory frameworks (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, PCI-DSS ).Assist in preparing for audits and reviews by ensuring that all security controls are documented and functioning properly.Security Tool Administration:Assist in the configuration and maintenance of security tools and technologies such as firewalls, anti-virus software, encryption tools, and security monitoring platforms.Perform routine updates and maintenance of security systems, ensuring they are operating efficiently and up-to-date.User Access & Identity Management:Help manage user access control, ensuring that appropriate permissions are granted based on job responsibilities and security policies.Assist in implementing multi-factor authentication (MFA) and role-based access controls (RBAC) to enhance security.Support the process of reviewing and auditing user accounts to ensure that access rights are aligned with current policies.Security Awareness & Training:Help create and deliver security awareness training to employees, educating them on topics like phishing, social engineering, and safe browsing practices.Assist in maintaining security documentation and internal knowledge bases for both technical teams and non-technical users.Collaboration & Reporting:Collaborate with other IT teams, such as network engineers, system administrators, and developers, to address security concerns and ensure proper implementation of security measures.Report on security incidents, system vulnerabilities, and other issues to senior security engineers and management.Participate in meetings to discuss the status of security initiatives, risk assessments, and mitigation strategies.Qualifications & Skills:TheJunior Security Engineerrole is an entry-level position that requires foundational knowledge of cybersecurity principles, tools, and techniques.
