Senior Orthopaedic Physiotherapist – UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic Dublin

Location: UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic, Santry, Dublin 9.
Job type: Full-time Contract of Employment


Overview of role

The successful candidate will support the Inpatient and Post-operative Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Service, providing clinical and administrative duties to ensure a high‑quality service. The role is ward‑based with up to 6 hours of administrative/management time per week and may involve post‑operative caseload support or consultant work as required.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

* Assist the Lead IPOP physiotherapist in the day‑to‑day running of the ward‑based physiotherapy service and in‑patient care.
* Deliver a high‑quality service of in‑patient, pre‑operative and post‑operative patient physiotherapy following the SSC6 approach.
* Lead the implementation and monitoring of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols.
* Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and contribute to discharge planning.
* Assist the Lead Physiotherapist in operational and strategic planning.
* Assist in the delivery of an outpatient service to Consultant outpatient clinics within the hospital.
* Refer where appropriate for engagement with consulting surgeon, programs, sports physicians, and outpatient rehabilitation.
* Track weekly inpatient physiotherapy caseloads and collate a monthly report.
* Provide regular feedback to junior IPOP physiotherapists, mentoring where appropriate.
* Help manage rosters, time management (TMS) and scheduling of the inpatient physiotherapy team.
* Fit boots, braces, and other orthopaedic devices as required by the service.
* Maintain a 7‑day a week physiotherapy service on a rota.
* Ensure accurate record keeping and electronic patient record including billing, and adheres to evidence‑based medicine standards.
* Develop on‑going protocols and evidence‑based management in collaboration with inpatient and outpatient teams.
* Uphold patient dignity at all times.
* Complete stream‑oriented and department‑based tasks as directed by the IPOP Lead.
* Arrange and carry out duties in a timely manner within settings appropriate to service user needs and in line with local policy and guidelines.
* Maintain professional standards regarding consent, confidentiality, ethics and legislation.
* Contribute to the continuous professional development programme in the physiotherapy department.
* Help develop post‑operative protocols that align with the SSC6 pathway.
* Engage in research with a goal of publishing at least one poster or paper per year in a peer‑reviewed journal or national conference.
* Assist in conducting an audit of service delivery on delegated topics of interest.


Qualifications & Experience

* Bachelor of Science (Hons) Degree or equivalent.
* Minimum of 3 years post‑graduate experience.
* Experience working in an orthopaedic or in‑patient environment.
* Current CORU registration; membership in the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists desirable.
* Preferable: MSc in Physiotherapy, Strength and Conditioning, or Sports Science.
