Overview
Systems Engineer, ESC Managed Operations at AWS. The role focuses on automation and operations for the European Sovereign Cloud (ESC), building and leading operations and development teams to deliver high-availability AWS services (EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, Bedrock) exclusively for EU customers.
Responsibilities
* Oversee the launch of the ESC in 2025, work with global AWS teams, and influence the evolution of AWS services and technology.
* Collaborate with technology leaders to enhance day-to-day operations and improve availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of the ESC.
* Occasionally participate in on-call rotations to resolve incidents occurring out-of-hours.
* Review operational health of services, identify anomalies, and craft actionable bug reports to improve efficiency and performance.
* Provide constructive feedback on change management documents and address the operational backlog; develop and test scripts to improve workflows.
* Educate service teams about the European Sovereign Cloud to share knowledge and foster collaboration.
* Commit to 24x7 on-call responsibility as part of a team to root-cause issues and maintain resilience and fault tolerance.
Eligibility & Basic Qualifications
* Fluency in written and spoken English; national of an EU member state and residing in the EU to operate the AWS ESC.
* Relocation support within the European Union for successful applicants; employees will participate in an on-call rota.
* Experience as a systems engineer with hardware, software, networking, and operating systems; scripting in Bash, Python, or Ruby; solid Linux and networking troubleshooting; ability to create or improve SOPs and drive operational best practices.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience with monitoring frameworks (CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana, Elastic, or similar).
* Experience mentoring junior engineers and leading cross-organizational efforts requiring collaboration across multiple teams.
* Experience supporting services in AWS or other cloud environments.
* Experience operating 24x7 high-availability, distributed applications and performance tuning to optimize fleet utilization.
* Experience with Infrastructure as Code (CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or similar).
