Job Purpose:
The primary responsibility of the Fire Safety Engineer is to guarantee the safety and compliance of buildings. This involves inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and installing fire doors, as well as overseeing the installation, inspection, and maintenance of fire-stopping systems per Irish legislation and industry standards. The Fire Safety Engineer is crucial in maintaining compartmentation and preventing the spread of fire, smoke, and toxic gases through service penetrations in fire-rated structures.
Key Responsibilities:
Inspection & Assessment
Conduct detailed inspections of fire doors in commercial, residential, and public buildings.
Identify non-compliance issues and recommend corrective actions.
Complete inspection reports in line with Irish fire safety standards.
Conduct inspections and remedial works on existing fire-stopping installations.
Interpret construction drawings and specifications to identify fire-rated assemblies and penetrations.
Maintenance & Repairs
Carry out routine maintenance and repairs on fire doors, including seals, hinges, closers, and signage.
Ensure all components meet the required fire resistance ratings and operational standards.
Conduct inspections and remedial works on existing fire-stopping installations.
Conduct site surveys and risk assessments to determine fire stopping requirements.
Installation
Install new fire doors and associated hardware in compliance with manufacturer specifications and Irish Building Regulations.
Ensure correct fitting, certification, and documentation of all installations.
Install fire-stopping systems (e.g., sealants, collars, wraps, boards) in accordance with manufacturer specifications and fire safety regulations.
Compliance & Documentation
Maintain accurate documentation and photographic evidence of installations.
Identify and report non-compliant installations or materials
Follow manufacturer specifications and installation guidelines precisely
Ensure all work complies with relevant Irish legislation, including:
Technical Guidance Document B (TGD-B) - Fire Safety
Building Regulations 1997-2021
Fire Services Act 1981
Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005
Customer Service
Liaise with clients, building managers, and contractors to explain findings and provide guidance on fire door and compartmentation compliance.
Provide professional advice on fire safety improvements.
Stay up to date with industry best practices and new fire-stopping technologies.
About You:
* Relevant trade qualification (e.g., carpentry, joinery, or fire safety engineering).
* Certification in fire door inspection and installation (e.g., BM TRADA, FDIS, or equivalent).
* Minimum 2 years' experience in fire door inspection, maintenance, or installation.
* Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
* Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
* Full clean driving licence (if travel is required).
* Strong knowledge of Irish fire safety legislation and standards.
* Competent in using digital inspection, compliance and reporting tools.
* Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
* Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
* Strong communication and reporting skills.
Desirable:
* Certification in passive fire protection (e.g., ASFP Level 2 or 3, IFC, or equivalent)
* Safe Pass, Manual Handling, and Working at Height certification.
