Overview of role
UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic are recruiting for the role of Clinical Nurse Manager 1 on our Day Ward, Theatre.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Lead by example, ensuring proactive, patient‑centred care to a consistently high standard.
Ensure efficiency of the Day Ward, develop team members and monitor quality standards.
Commit to the ethos and philosophy of the Sports Surgery Clinic.
Develop strategies and service goals for the Day Ward with the Theatre Manager and other Clinical Nurse Managers.
Provide professional leadership, facilitate team building, planned care.
Maintain quality standard of service, lead proactive quality improvement, support accreditation.
Participate in change management and improve patient needs response.
Ensure all staff members proficient in management of patient care.
Audit nursing practice and evaluate improvements in quality of patient care.
Support staff development.
Plan duty rosters ensuring adequate skill mix.
Communicate with Theatre Manager, Clinical Nurse Managers and other stakeholders.
Advocate and maintain open communication with Senior Nurse Management and the multidisciplinary team.
Develop good working relationships to promote seamless care.
Act as a patient advocate through communication, negotiation and representation.
Promote courteous and helpful attitude to colleagues, staff, relatives, visitors.
Overcome communication difficulties to ensure effective transfer of information.
Assist Director of Nursing with investigations related to complaints.
Maintain IT skills for electronic information transfer.
Provide planned individualised holistic care for patients and ensure efficient planning/liaison with interdisciplinary teams.
Assess, plan, implement, evaluate and document care.
Demonstrate advanced specialist knowledge and clinical leadership.
Participate in development, formulation and evaluation of guidelines, policies and procedures.
Exercise high levels of judgement, discretion and decision making.
Protect patient confidentiality at all times.
Provide supervision/direction for team members.
Comply with Misuse of Drugs Act 1977.
Maintain safe environment following Infection Control Policy, Universal Guidelines etc.
Report untoward incidents to Theatre Manager / Clinical Nurse Manager and Director of Nursing.
Maintain safe custody of controlled drugs according to Clinic policy.
Ensure daily cleaning standards, report inadequacies.
Keep accurate reporting system of near misses, incidents, complaints; coordinate risk management activities.
Stay updated with current research, contribute to nursing research.
Adhere to departmental patient identification policy at all times.
Provide high standard of safe practice for patient care.
Ensure equipment in the Day Ward checked as per Clinic policy.
Show initiative and receptiveness to new ideas and development.
Provide clinical expertise within the Day Ward.
Conduct clinical audit ensuring practice is evidence based; develop action plans.
Ensure patient care is current best practice.
Educate nursing and allied staff, provide mentorship and educational programmes.
Support and participate in education and in‑service programmes for all staff.
Ensure all team members have undertaken mandatory training.
Promote self‑care and wellness through patient education, health promotion and training.
Assist Theatre Manager with staff annual appraisals.
Undertake further training to enhance specialty knowledge.
Attend and contribute to clinic committees and interdepartmental meetings.
Maintain adherence to clinic policies and NMBI guidelines.
Assist Theatre Manager or deputy in maintaining excellence in patient care.
Perform other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned.
Qualifications & Experience
Registered in the general division of the Register of Nurses by An Bord Altranais.
At least five years post‑registration nursing experience (full‑time or equivalent part‑time) in an acute hospital setting, with a minimum of three years recent nursing experience in a relevant area.
Hold a management qualification or be willing to pursue one.
Previous management experience is an advantage.
Well‑developed leadership, interpersonal and organisational skills.
Computer skills.
Orthopaedic experience.
