Rural GP Locum – County Mayo (with Island Work) | August 2025
We are currently seeking a committed, adaptable Locum GP to provide full-time cover for a truly unique rural practice based in County Mayo, with on-call duties extending to offshore island communities.
Dates Required:
1 Full Week in August 2025
(Monday–Sunday inclusive)
Location:
* Main base: Clinic in Co. Mayo (Mon–Fri, 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM)
* Island clinics (x2 weekly): One via small ferry, the other via currach (traditional boat)
* Transport provided for all island travel
* Most patients are offshore-based
On-Call & Clinic Details:
* Monday–Friday, 9:30–4:30 (note: Karen is not available on Mondays)
* 24/7 on-call availability by phone required during the week
* Out-of-hours contact is typically phone-based, with minimal in-person intervention
* Two excellent nurses on Clare Island handle most routine matters
* In rare emergency situations, the GP may need to:
* Arrange medevac (lifeboat + ambulance or helicopter)
* Or travel to the island to assist
Systems & Support:
* Practice software: HealthOne
* Prescriptions are emailed to Achill pharmacy, collected, and brought by GP to the islands for dispensing
* Medication Administration Requests are sent directly to island nurses for phone-directed treatment
Requirements:
* Active Irish Medical Council (IMC) registration
* Own medical indemnity
* Comfort with remote work, island travel, and rural medicine
* Ability to stay locally in Mayo for the full week
