Charter Medical Private Hospital (CMPH) is a 77-bed surgical hospital located on the outskirts of Mullingar with four operating theatres and an endoscopy unit. We provide a wide range of surgical care across multiple specialties and offer 24/7 Stepdown, Minor Injuries, and Rapid Access services in collaboration with the HSE.

Role Summary

The Staff Nurse – Dual Qualified (General & Paediatric) - Surgical Ward and Theatre is responsible for delivering comprehensive, high-quality nursing care to both adult and paediatric patients within the perioperative setting. This role involves providing anaesthetic support during surgical procedures, ensuring patient safety and comfort throughout the perioperative journey, and maintaining a high standard of clinical practice. This nurse will collaborate closely with anaesthetists, surgeons, and the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe and efficient care while upholding the hospital's core values of compassion, excellence, and professionalism.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice:

* Deliver safe, effective, and evidence-based nursing care to both adult and paediatric patients undergoing anaesthesia.
* Assist the anaesthetist with preparation, induction, maintenance, and emergence from anaesthesia, including airway management and monitoring.
* Prepare and check anaesthetic equipment, drugs, and supplies in accordance with hospital protocols and manufacturer guidelines.
* Monitor patient status and respond promptly to changes in condition, escalating concerns appropriately.
* Demonstrate knowledge and application of the Paediatric Early Warning System (PEWS) and escalate deteriorating patients to the appropriate clinical personnel.
* Ensure accurate documentation of nursing assessments, care, and interventions in compliance with professional and hospital standards.
* Maintain aseptic technique and adhere to infection prevention and control policies.

Patient-Centred Care:

* Advocate for the comfort, safety, and dignity of both adult and paediatric patients throughout the perioperative experience.
* Provide reassurance and clear communication to children, parents, and families during anaesthetic and recovery processes.
* Demonstrate sensitivity to the emotional and developmental needs of paediatric patients.

Collaboration and Communication:

* Work collaboratively with anaesthetists, surgeons, theatre staff, and recovery personnel to deliver coordinated patient care.
* Liaise with theatre consultants regarding patient management and treatment plans.
* Participate in theatre safety briefings, debriefings, and handovers to ensure effective communication and continuity of care.

Professional and Quality Standards:

* Adhere to the NMBI Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics, hospital policies, and clinical governance frameworks.
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and clinical risk management programmes.
* Report and document incidents or near misses promptly in accordance with hospital policy.
* Contribute to the development and review of anaesthetic and perioperative policies, procedures, and standards.

Education and Professional Development:

* Engage in continuous professional development to maintain dual registration competencies and specialist anaesthetic knowledge.
* Participate in ward-based and hospital-wide training, in-service education, and skills development programmes.
* Maintain an up-to-date professional portfolio and support the clinical learning of student nurses and new staff.

Health and Safety:

* Promote and maintain a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors at all times.
* Ensure compliance with infection control, waste management, and health and safety policies.
* Identify and report equipment faults or hazards immediately to the appropriate personnel.

Essential Criteria - Knowledge/ Experience

Eligible applicants will be those who on the closing date for the completion can demonstrate the following.

1. Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc

(i) Are registered in the relevant division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann) or entitled to be so registered.

(ii) Have at least 3 years post registration full time experience (or an aggregate of 3 years post registration full time experience) of which 1 year post registration full time experience (or an aggregate of 1 year's post registration full time experience) must be in the speciality or related area.

(iii) Have the clinical and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role.

(iv) Candidates must demonstrate evidence of Continuing Professional Development.

2. Annual registration

(i) On appointment, Practitioners must maintain live annual registration on the relevant division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann).

(ii) Confirm annual registration with NMBI to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).

3. Health

Candidates for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

4. Character

Candidates for and any person holding the office must be of good character.

5. Post Specific Requirements

· Up-to-date certification in Basic Life Support (BLS); Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) desirable.

· Demonstrated competence in clinical assessment, airway management, and perioperative anaesthetic support.

· Competence in the use of clinical information systems and healthcare technology.

· Commitment to evidence-based practice and continuous professional development.

· A postgraduate qualification in Anaesthetic Nursing or Paediatric Nursing is desirable or willingness to undertake same.

* Manages workload effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity theatre setting.
* Prioritises tasks efficiently while maintaining attention to detail in patient preparation and monitoring.

6. Adaptability and Initiative

* Demonstrates flexibility in working across adult and paediatric cases as required.

Responds confidently to changing clinical situations, emergencies, or scheduling demands.
