Purpose
Deliver care in line with the five core concepts of the role set out in the Framework for the Establishment of Clinical Nurse Specialist Posts, 4th edition, National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery (NCNM) 2008, while adhering to the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives (2025) as laid down by NMBI.
Caseload
Laurels Clinic Caseload: Children and young people under 14 years of age, where there is a concern or disclosure of acute sexual assault/abuse who attend for forensic medical examination; children and young people up to 16 years of age where there is a concern or disclosure of non‑acute sexual assault/abuse who attend for medical examination.
Responsibilities
Provide co‑ordinated holistic physical and psychological care and follow‑up care, within the Barnahus model of care, to children and young people where there is a concern or disclosure of child sexual abuse.
With further training, gain competency in carrying out a forensic clinical examination and/or child protection medical assessment.
Be part of a co‑ordinated, multi‑disciplinary and inter‑agency response to the child and family where there is a concern or disclosure of child sexual abuse, through the Barnahus model of care.
Provide education to staff and the public regarding services and care of children and young people following child sexual abuse.
Essential Criteria
Be a registered nurse/midwife on the active Register of Nurses and Midwives held by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland or be eligible to be so registered.
Be registered in the division(s) of child nursing with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann); or, in exceptional circumstances, be registered in another division of the register.
Have a minimum of 1 year of post‑registration full‑time experience, or an aggregate of 1 year of full‑time experience in the division of the register in which the application is being made.
Have a minimum of 1 year of experience in the specialist area of sexual assault forensic nursing.
Have successfully completed a post‑registration programme of study, as certified by the education provider, verifying that the applicant has achieved a Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) National Framework of Qualifications major academic Level 9 or higher award (equivalent to 60 ECTS or above), or provide written evidence from a Higher Education Institute of an equivalent number of ECTS credits.
Demonstrate continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to the specialist area, or be supported to obtain the required CPD.
Have the ability to practise safely and effectively within the scope of practice.
Possess the requisite knowledge, clinical, professional and administrative capacity for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
