Overview
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Haematology at UPMC Whitfield Hospital will support the development of a clinical practice role that balances patient‑facing and non‑patient‑facing responsibilities. The CNS will act as a key liaison between patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams, ensuring continuity of care, symptom management, and psychosocial support throughout the cancer journey.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Work closely with patients, medical and nursing teams, and the multidisciplinary team to deliver evidence‑based care.
Provide patient and family education pre‑ and post‑treatment.
Serve as a clinical resource for patients receiving haematological treatment.
Maintain a clinical database of patients, treatments and outcomes.
Document all procedures, evaluations, treatments and outcomes in accordance with hospital and national standards.
Participate in follow‑up clinics and phone calls as required.
Develop and lead specialist haematology nursing clinics.
Coordinate investigations, treatments, and follow‑up for patients.
Provide medication reconciliation and support for medication reviews.
Identify and promote symptom‑management strategies and self‑management plans.
Act as a point of contact for out‑patient services, including a telephone triage hotline.

Enhance collaboration between acute services and other healthcare sites.
Managerial Responsibilities
Provide efficient, high‑quality nursing service respecting individual needs.
Manage time and caseload effectively.
Monitor nursing service to reflect current needs.
Collaborate with leadership to implement changes.
Maintain confidentiality of records (GDPR compliance).
Represent the specialist nursing service at local, national and international forums.
Support sustainable initiatives for a low‑carbon health service.
KPIs
Develop and track Key Performance Indicators aligned with the hospital service plan.
Create action plans to address KPI targets.
Promote a performance‑management culture.
Assist in developing a performance‑management system for Haematology.
Education & Training
Maintain clinical competence and stay updated with relevant research.
Provide education and supportive interventions to patients, families, and carers.
Design and implement education programmes and resources.
Participate in training programmes for nursing, MDT, and stakeholders.
Create learning opportunities within the MDT through journal clubs, conferences, etc.
Collaborate with educational institutions for nursing educational programmes.
Engage in continuous professional development and CPD.
Use protected time for research, education and professional development.
Audit & Research
Maintain a register of service users.
Record and analyse data aligned with national KPIs.
Initiate and conduct nursing audit and research projects.
Disseminate best evidence to improve practice.
Contribute to service planning and budgeting using audit data.
Advocate for improvements across non‑nursing services.
Consultant Responsibilities
Lead clinical practice and act as a role model for Haematology practice.
Develop clinical standards, guidelines, and support implementation.
Enhance general nursing practice with specialist knowledge.
Build collaborative relationships with oncology nurses, advanced nurses, and other MDT members.
Attend integrated care planning meetings as required.
Develop relationships with community specialist services.
Liaise with other health service providers to support national clinical programmes.
Network with clinical nurse specialists in oncology and related associations.
Quality, Risk & Safety Responsibilities
Cooperate with regulatory and legislative requirements for quality, risk, and safety.
Participate in local initiatives and audits (e.g., hygiene, decontamination, health & safety).
Implement quality‑improvement initiatives.
Contribute to PPPG development and uphold professional standards.
Comply with UPMC Ireland Complaints Policy.
Complete incident/near‑miss forms and clinical risk reporting.
Adhere to equipment and safety policies.
Maintain compliance with hygiene standards and guidelines.
Professional Knowledge
Practice in accordance with relevant legislation and codes of conduct.
Maintain professional behaviour and accountability.
Adhere to Nursing & Midwifery values and local PPPGs.
Follow HIQA, NCCP and other relevant regulations.
Respect lines of authority within the nurse/midwife management structure.
Qualifications & Experience
Registered nurse on the active register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (or eligible to register).
Have completed a post‑registration programme in Cancer Nursing (Level 8 or higher) within one year of commencing the role.
Minimum of 3 years full‑time experience in Cancer Nursing or an aggregate of 3 years full‑time experience.
Evidence of career development and a personal development plan.
Demonstrated competence in continuing professional development.
Demonstrated ability to practice safely and effectively within scope of practice.
Maintain live annual registration on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland and confirm with UPMC Ireland.
Salary
€57,009.91 – €67,138.95 per annum (based on a 37‑hour week)
