Job Overview
Staff Nurse – Emergency Department (Permanent, 37.5 hrs per week, Full‑Time)
Location: Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland
Key Responsibilities

Assessment, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation

Utilising assessment skills and techniques to determine patient needs on admission.
Documenting nursing admission assessment thoroughly and accurately.
Continually assessing patient condition.
Clearly identifying patient problems for which nursing care will be given.
Developing and documenting a care plan based on patient needs and best practice.
Updating the written or computerised care plan.
Developing appropriate and individualised patient education and discharge planning and utilising available ward resources for the same.
Collaborating with other health care team members within the defined clinical area in accordance with the patient care plan.
Developing discharge criteria from time of admission.
Planning work to allow time for training, meetings, etc.
Providing safe, comprehensive nursing based on current standards and research, performing procedures according to established policy and procedures.
Administering the developed care plan in a consistent and flexible manner.
Fulfilling prescribed orders completely and accurately.
Providing care with minimal supervision in a timely, accurate and safe manner.
Maintaining a safe environment for patients, visitors and colleagues.
Advocating as necessary for patients, respecting their dignity and confidentiality.
Functioning effectively in an emergency situation.
Adapting to changing workloads.
Knowing and practising within legal requirements including those set down by NMBI.
Evaluating and updating care plans appropriately.
Evaluating personal nursing practice as compared to standards of care and knowing own ability and competence.
Participating in quality assurance by assisting to identify recurrent nursing problems and cooperating in data collection and problem solving.
Complying with all hospital policies in relation to Infection Prevention and Control.
Promoting the safety, health, welfare and social wellbeing of patients and respecting the dignity and confidentiality of patients and their families.
Maintaining appropriate and accurate written/electronic nursing and midwifery records and care plans regarding patient care in accordance with local/national/professional guidelines.
Taking responsibility for own competency and learning and development needs and actively contributing to the learning and development of the wider nursing and primary care team.
Co‑operating with the introduction of ICT systems, utilising and analysing the data and adopting the use of new systems in line with policies and procedures.
Ensuring that records are protected and managed as per Blackrock Clinic's policy and in accordance with relevant legislation.
Working closely with colleagues across the hospital in order to provide a seamless service delivery to the patients.
Providing evidence of participation in audit and evaluation of care provision including collection of quality care metrics where such are in place.


Communication Skills

Maintaining documents according to the policies and procedures of Blackrock Clinic.
Updating documents to observe physical and emotional symptoms and changes.
Reporting relevant information verbally and in writing to appropriate nursing personnel.
Responding appropriately to patient/family requests and questions.
Communicating appropriately with colleagues and other members of the health care team.
Recognising self-limitations and seeking assistance.
Attending and contributing in staff meetings and team briefing.
Communicating in a manner that avoids antagonism, reduces conflict and prevents undue anxiety.


Professional Expectations

Functioning within the limits of NMBI and hospital policies, procedures and standards.
Supporting the Mission Statement of Blackrock Clinic.
Observing appropriate lines of authority.
Demonstrating flexibility by assisting in other areas of the hospital as required.
Setting annual goals and objectives with CNM.
Continuing to develop personal knowledge and skills.
Seeking and taking education opportunities in addition to those provided by the hospital.
Providing direct supervision to other members of the nursing team when appropriate.
Participating in working groups to develop and promote quality care within Blackrock Clinic.
Participating in the education of learners and assisting with the orientation of new personnel.
Presenting a professional appearance and being punctual.
Accepting responsibility for "Acting Up" in specific instances, as assigned.
Complying with and adhering to all relevant policies and procedures.



Qualifications

Registered in the general division of NMBI.
Evidence of personal professional development.
Ongoing skills training relevant to care required for patient case load.
At least three years recent relevant post‑registration nursing experience (full‑time or equivalent) in an acute hospital setting with at least one year’s Emergency Department nursing experience.
