Apptio, an IBM Company, is seeking a Staff Software Development Engineer to join a dynamic, cross-functional team of engineers and data scientists focused on building intelligent, LLM-powered features within our FinOps (Financial Operations) platform.
In this role, you will lead the engineering efforts to build scalable, production-grade systems that enable customers to interact with their data using natural language and derive actionable insights.
You'll work closely with machine learning engineers, product managers, and UX designers to integrate Large Language Models (LLMs) into real-world financial data workflows
Your role and responsibilities
Design and build core backend components for our LLM-powered assistant within FinOps applications.Develop secure, scalable APIs that allow customers to query and interact with their financial and operational data using natural language.Collaborate with data scientists to integrate LLMs for use cases like data exploration, summarization, anomaly detection, and recommendations.Partner with frontend developers to create seamless, intelligent user experiences.Contribute to architectural decisions and establish best practices for building AI-enhanced SaaS features.Lead code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and drive engineering excellence across the team.Ensure reliability, observability, and performance of the systems you build.Required educationNone

Required technical and professional expertise
8+ years of software engineering experience with a proven track record of delivering backend or full-stack applications at scale.Deep proficiency in Python, Go, or Java, with an ability to contribute to frontend (React or similar) as needed.Familiarity with vector databases, embedding generation, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines.Experience working in cloud-native environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure), ideally with container orchestration (Kubernetes/EKS).Strong understanding of system design, API architecture, data modeling, and security best practices.Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.Preferred technical and professional experiencePrior experience in FinOps, cloud cost optimization, or financial data analytics.Experience with frameworks like LangChain, LlamaIndex, or semantic search systems.Background in data engineering, NLP, or MLOps.ABOUT BUSINESS UNITIBM Software infuses core business operations with intelligence—from machine learning to generative AI—to help make organizations more responsive, productive, and resilient.
