The Role
Engineers Grade III (Civil) typically report to an Engineer Grade II or Grade I (Civil).
They work with
supporting staff such as Civil Engineering Technicians and Draughtspersons and may also be
required to supervise operational staff in their assigned Division.
Key Duties and Responsibilities of the Role
The specific duties of each Engineer Grade III (Civil) role will largely be determined by the Division to
which successful candidates are assigned.
Key duties and responsibilities may include:
• Assisting in / undertaking the management of Projects as part of a team or on own initiative.
This may include management of the human, budget and other resources allocated to the work
area and of projects and technical assessments, studies or research in connection with the
areas of activity of the Division.
• Preparing and disseminating drawings and calculations accurately and in a timely manner
according to contract drawings and providing relevant information (Drawings, Specifications
etc) to OPW staff and sub-contractors.

• Liaising with other team members, staff within the OPW and other public bodies, local
authorities, local organisations and individuals, and attending meetings, as necessary for the
work of the Division.
• Organising, co-ordinating and supervising the work of technical and operational staff.
• Assisting in the development of tender documents, contract administration and complying with
public procurement guidelines.
• Managing and monitoring Safety and Health issues in compliance with relevant legislation.

From time to time, other duties
and responsibilities appropriate to the role may be assigned by an Engineer Grade II, Grade I or
Assistant Chief Engineer.
Vacancies and Locations
There are currently two vacancies for Engineers Grade III (Civil) in the OPW's offices in Trim, Co.
Meath.
A panel will be formed from this competition to fill future vacancies that are likely to arise across the
Flood Risk Management Services Divisions in the following counties: Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Galway,
Kilkenny, Limerick, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Sligo, Westmeath and Wexford.
Candidates are required to specify on the application form the location choice(s) in which they are
willing to be placed.
Candidates can only select a maximum of two locations.
The onus is on candidates to select their correct location choice(s).
Changes to these choice(s) will
not be permitted after the closing date.
No exceptions will be made.
It is not expected that appointments will be made from this panel after August ****.
Training and Development
The OPW is committed to ensuring that all staff members are given the support and assistance
required to realise their full potential within the organisation.
As part of its strategy to meet this
objective, Flood Risk Management Services provides opportunities for staff to develop professional
skills and knowledge over a wide range of competencies.
OPW staff have access to a wide range of
Civil Service wide learning and development opportunities, to support and develop core civil service
competencies.
In addition, OPW Flood Risk Management Services is an Engineers Ireland Continuing Professional
Development (CPD) Accredited Employer, and professional and technical staff are required to actively
participate in the scheme including the objective of lifelong learning.
There is a formal mentoring
programme in place for all new engineering entrants.
The programme is in addition to the existing
Performance Management and Development System (PMDS) and is integrated into the CPD
programme.
Professional, technical, ICT and management training is provided to keep staff up to date
on relevant developments.
Other learning opportunities, including support for academic studies, may also be provided.
