Role Overview
The Director of Education and Training oversees and develops postgraduate education for paediatric specialist training programmes (basic and higher specialist training).
Reporting relationships
Reports to the Dean of the Faculty and manages Clinical Leads, National Specialist Directors for Higher and Basic Specialist Training. Chairs the Specialty Training Committee. Works with Dean of Postgraduate Specialist Training, National Specialty Directors, Associate Director for Training Site Accreditation, and Head of Postgraduate Training and Education.
Responsibilities
Lead development and implementation of strategy for postgraduate training, research and education within the Faculty.
Contribute to the continuing improvement of postgraduate education programmes in line with international standards.
Oversee quality assurance of the training programmes.
Lead development of training curricula and assessments.
Lead development of new programmes/courses for trainees.
Develop and organise study day and simulation educational programmes for postgraduate training programmes.
Collaborate with the RCPI Postgraduate Dean on overall strategy for postgraduate training and education.
Through RCPI Advisory Committee and Faculty Board, lead development of Faculty policy on postgraduate education.
Contribute to RCPI policy affecting postgraduate trainees through advisory committees and working groups.
Meet regularly with the Dean (at least every two months) and key training personnel to discuss updates and ongoing matters.
Attend meetings with HSE NDTP and the Chair on training posts numbers and funding proposals.
Lead the specialty accreditation process with the Medical Council of Ireland on behalf of the Faculty.
Lead development of the workforce plan for the specialty on behalf of the Faculty.
Review applications for the Specialist Division of the Register.
Guide decisions on postgraduate trainee progress and monitor trainee progress at the Faculty level.
Provide academic and pastoral advice to postgraduate trainees, handle casework on progress, appeals, and complaints.
Oversee updating of information for current and prospective postgraduate trainees.
Liaise with RCPI educationalists in developing the training programme.
Chair specialty training committee meetings and sit on the Examinations Board for MRCPI.
Chair relevant Faculty committees and report on activities to the Dean, Faculty Board, and other committees.
Liaise with Associate Directors and National Specialty Directors to encourage consistency across postgraduate education.
As a key member of the Faculty Board, participate in relevant decision‑making and receive appropriate administrative and secretarial assistance.
Requirements
Fellow of the Faculty of Paediatrics in good standing.
Registered on the Medical Council Specialist Division.
Experience in medical postgraduate training and education.
Background in medical education desirable.
