Clinical Nurse Specialist / Clinical Nurse Manager II – Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic relapsing, remitting condition that requires ongoing management. Beaumont Hospital manages a cohort of 2000 IBD patients and provides a transition service for adolescents with IBD between Crumlin and Beaumont. The post holder must demonstrate team leadership and management in maintaining and developing a high‑quality service for patients with IBD. Responsibilities include day‑to‑day management of patients in inpatient and clinic settings.
Responsibilities
Clinical Focus
Act as a practitioner establishing and maintaining a high‑quality, evidence‑based nursing service.
Accept and manage referrals; provide an inpatient IBD service pathway.
Co‑ordinate new treatments and refer to infusion facilities or home‑care services.
Participate in planning and care delivery for patients attending the IBD service.
Provide support to families and significant others through listening, problem‑solving, and education.
Oversee outreach support for patients at home.
Attend IBD Nurse‑Led Outpatient Clinics and coordinate visits for each patient.
Assess patients for referral to specialist services and report promptly to the consultant.
Co‑ordinate relevant services in preparation for treatment.
Attend multidisciplinary team meetings.
Educate patients regarding diagnoses and treatments.
Maintain accurate clinical records in compliance with legislation and best practice.
Demonstrate specialist knowledge and clinical expertise in patient care.
Ensure hospital policies and procedures are observed in collaboration with health‑care professionals.
Assist in developing and implementing policies and nursing guidelines for IBD care.
Show leadership ability and communication skills.
Attend transition and virtual clinics; work with IBD consultants on biosimilar switch programmes.
Manage the IBD nurse advice line.
Patient Advocate
Provide a high‑quality service that respects each patient’s needs.
Act as a resource/contact person for IBD patients in other departments or outside the hospital.
Provide patients and families with contact details for the IBD nurse specialist service.
Identify available resources/services such as social services, support groups, and entitlements.
Advocate for patients in clinical trials, providing information and communicating with research staff.
Participate in team discussions regarding patient treatment.
Facilitate development of information leaflets for patients and families.
Education, Training and Self‑Development
Create and maintain an evidence‑based teaching and learning environment.
Act as an effective role model, mentor, and leader of staff.
Identify and utilise teaching, learning, and practice opportunities in the clinical setting.
Ensure availability of appropriate educational resources for patients and families.
Maintain and update knowledge of relevant professional development and current trends in IBD nursing.
Attend and participate in staff development programmes and represent IBD nursing at meetings and conferences.
Discuss performance and future needs with the Directorate Nurse Manager.
Audit and Research
Ensure own practice is compliant with best practice and reflected in research and development.
Participate in regular audit of own clinical practice.
Develop and maintain a patient‑centred quality assurance programme using up‑to‑date research findings.
Use research findings to influence care within the specialty.
Set objectives and develop policies, procedures and standards for the IBD nursing services based on nursing and other research.
Identify research opportunities within the specialty.
Promote research‑based practice among staff.
Participate in departmental research and produce an annual department report.
Evaluate audit results and research findings to identify areas for quality improvement.
Consultancy
Provide clinical leadership and serve as a resource and role model for IBD nursing practice.
Establish partnerships and contribute to professional development of students, peers, and colleagues through consultation, education, mentorship, and coaching.
Support, advise, and help build up the primary‑care team’s expertise in providing appropriate care to patients and families.
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships within the MDT and with other health‑care professionals.
Support national clinical care programmes and agreed models of care for patients and families.
Use specialist knowledge to support and enhance general nursing practice.
Participate in change management to develop services based on patient needs.
Attend gastroenterology conferences, committees, and lecture and disseminate knowledge.
Qualifications
Mandatory
Statutory registration and professional qualifications (registered nurse or midwife on the active register of Nurses and Midwives, or eligible to be registered).
Minimum of one year’s post‑registration full‑time experience in the relevant specialty area, or an aggregate of one year of full‑time experience.
Successfully completed a post‑registration programme of study at Level 9 or higher (equivalent to 60 ECTS) or equivalent proof of achievement of the required credits.
Demonstrated continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to the specialist area.
Ability to practice safely and effectively within scope of practice.
Annual registration and confirmation with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
Maintenance of a live annual registration in the relevant Division.
Desirable
Completion of a management course.
