We are seeking an experienced and commercially focused Company Accountant to manage and oversee the finance function within a busy commercial fit-out and contracts environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the preparation of accurate financial information, management accounts, cashflow reporting, subcontractor payment processes, cost control reporting, VAT/RCT compliance, payroll oversight, and supporting the Directors with financial decision-making.
This role requires someone who is highly organised, deadline-driven, confident dealing with project-based accounts, and capable of working closely with senior management, commercial teams, quantity surveyors, project managers, suppliers, subcontractors, and external advisors.
Key Responsibilities
The Company Accountant will be responsible for preparing timely and accurate monthly management accounts, including:
Profit and Loss reporting
Balance Sheet reconciliations
Cashflow reporting and forecasting
Debtor and creditor analysis
WIP reporting and review
Retentions reporting
Accruals and prepayments
Job costing and project margin reporting
Variance analysis against budgets and forecasts
Monthly financial commentary for the Managing Director and Directors
The role will involve ensuring that management accounts are prepared in line with agreed monthly deadlines and that financial information is reliable, accurate, and clearly presented.
Project Costing & Commercial Support
As the business operates within the contracts and fit-out sector, the role will involve close interaction with the commercial and operations teams.
Responsibilities will include:
Reviewing project costs against budgets
Supporting margin reviews on live and completed projects
Ensuring accurate allocation of costs to projects
Reviewing WIP, retentions, subcontractor accruals and project liabilities
Supporting Commercial & Operation Team’s with financial information
Identifying cost overruns, margin movements and reporting discrepancies
Assisting with project close-out financial reviews
The Company Accountant will oversee the subcontractor and supplier payment process, ensuring strong financial control and compliance.
Duties will include:
Ensuring subcontractor invoices match approved applications and valuations
Liaising with the Commercial Manager and Quantity Surveyors on payment approvals
Monitoring supplier statements and resolving queries
Managing aged creditors
Ensuring payment deadlines are met while protecting company cashflow
Maintaining accurate records of subcontractor accruals and retentions
Ensuring appropriate authorisation is in place before payments are processed
Revenue, VAT, RCT & Compliance
The Company Accountant will be responsible for ensuring that the company remains compliant with all relevant financial, Revenue and statutory obligations.
This will include:
VAT returns
RCT compliance and submissions
PAYE/PRSI/USC oversight
CRO and statutory filing support
Liaising with external accountants, auditors and tax advisors
Ensuring accounting records are maintained to a high standard
Supporting year-end audit and accounts preparation
Ensuring financial procedures meet internal and external compliance requirements
Payroll & Internal Administration
The role may include oversight of payroll and related finance administration.
Responsibilities may include:
Weekly/monthly payroll review or processing
Pension deductions and payroll-related submissions
Holiday and absence-related payroll coordination
Liaising with HR or management on payroll changes
Ensuring staff expenses and company credit card transactions are correctly processed
Reviewing fuel, fleet, travel and subsistence costs where applicable
Systems, Controls & Process Improvement
The Company Accountant will play an important role in strengthening financial systems, internal controls and reporting procedures.
Responsibilities will include:
Maintaining and improving accounting systems and processes
Supporting implementation or development of construction accounting/job costing software
Improving purchase order and invoice approval workflows
Ensuring proper document control for finance records
Developing stronger reporting templates and dashboards
Identifying areas for cost savings or improved efficiency
Ensuring finance processes are clear, documented and consistently followed
Key Skills & Experience Required
The ideal candidate should have:
Qualified accountant status: ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA or equivalent with 2-3 years’ experience
Previous experience in a construction, fit-out, contracting, engineering or project-based environment desirable
Strong experience preparing management accounts
Good understanding of job costing, WIP, retentions, accruals and project margins
Experience with VAT, RCT and Revenue compliance
Experience using accounting or construction finance software
Ability to work to strict monthly deadlines
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Excellent organisational and communication skills
Ability to work independently and take ownership of the finance function
Commercial awareness and ability to challenge figures where required
