Senior HV Electrical Design Engineer – Grid Connections

Overview
We are seeking a Senior HV Electrical Engineer to join our Dublin‑based Power team, working specifically on electricity grid connection projects across Ireland. This role plays a critical part in connecting large demand customers and generation assets to the Irish transmission and distribution networks, supporting Ireland’s energy transition and infrastructure growth.
You will work closely with EirGrid, ESB Networks, developers, and major clients on complex HV grid connection schemes, from early feasibility through to energisation.
The Role
Reporting to the Principal Engineer – Power, you will act as a technical lead on Irish grid connection projects across the full lifecycle.
Key responsibilities include:
Leading and delivering HV grid connection designs for transmission and distribution networks in Ireland
Acting as Owner’s Engineer for contestable works packages relating to grid connections
Technical review of HV plant and substation elements, including:
Substation layout and access
Earthing systems and earthing risk assessments
Interlocking philosophies
Busbar sizing and calculations
Primary plant specifications
Reviewing contractor detailed designs for compliance with:
EirGrid Functional Specifications
Outline design and connection offers
Producing and reviewing contestable works documentation, including:
Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
Schematics and interlocking diagrams
Substation layout drawings
Providing technical expertise on:
HV substations (AIS / GIS)
HV cable systems (110kV and above)
Interface points between customer installations and the grid
Supporting grid application processes, technical queries, and engagement with EirGrid and ESB Networks
Input into feasibility studies, connection strategy, and optioneering
Supporting site activities including construction monitoring, testing, and commissioning
Contributing to tendering and technical bid submissions for grid connection projects
About You
Degree‑qualified in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
Chartered Engineer or actively pursuing chartership
Strong experience delivering HV grid connection projects in Ireland
Proven knowledge of EirGrid and ESB Networks standards, specifications, and approval processes
Experience with HV substation design in the 110kV–400kV range
Ability to lead technical workstreams and interface with multiple stakeholders
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Desirable (but not essential)
AIS and GIS substation specification and design
Overhead line (OHL) exposure for grid connections
Site‑based construction or commissioning experience
Experience with:
CDEGS (earthing studies)
ETAP or similar for system studies / protection coordination
Control and protection systems design
Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
