Staff Nurse; Neurosurgery Inpatient Unit

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

Provide care for patients pre and post neurocranial surgery and neuro‑interventional radiology procedures.
Take the nursing history, summarise data, and state nursing diagnoses or patient care needs.
Observe and record signs, symptoms, and behaviours, including physiological status, and present assessment of changes, planned interventions and desired outcomes.
Follow policy for activating an individualised plan of care for newly admitted patients and deliver designated nursing interventions consistent with the medical plan of care.
Perform admission, discharge and transfer procedures and assist others with patient activities and care.
Execute consultant orders; administer medications and treatments safely.
Notify nursing and medical staff to changes in patient status.
Perform protocols and routines specific to the specialty area, including aseptic techniques, isolation procedures and infection control measures.
Document nursing care in all assigned patient records, maintain privacy and confidentiality.
Reassess care and document revisions to interventions and outcomes.
Demonstrate ability to assess patient understanding and compliance with instructions and health care teaching.
Review documentation of instructions, teaching topics and patient responses with the Nurse Manager or designee.
Adhere to internal controls established for the department and perform ad‑hoc duties as required.

Clinical Responsibilities

Adhere to the Professional Scope of Practice Framework (NMBI 2000).
Ensure patients’ needs are individually assessed and a care plan is implemented.
Involve patients’ families or significant others where appropriate.
Provide full nursing participation in supervision of meals and special dietary requirements.
Delegate tasks appropriately to staff based on skill level and knowledge.
Maintain professional, legible and timely documentation.
Participate in Total Quality Management processes, identifying quality, policy or guideline issues and evaluating current practices.
Contribute to audit processes including Hospital Wide Accreditation Cycle.

Managerial Responsibilities

Identify and communicate issues to the Nurse Manager promptly.
Demonstrate confidence and competence in all hospital policies and guidelines.
Record all necessary documentation efficiently.
Address complaints and monitor risk management processes.
Maintain effective interdisciplinary communication.
Utilise pay and non‑pay resources efficiently and deputise for the Nurse Manager as appropriate.
Participate in all ward and hospital nursing communication processes.

Professional Responsibilities

Attend mandatory education sessions and maintain a professional portfolio.
Ensure professional and personal conduct reflects the nursing profession.
Identify topics for nursing research and utilise teaching opportunities for patients and families.
Attend study days or courses, and act as preceptor or supervisor for students and newly appointed staff.

Educational Responsibilities

Develop teaching skills and participate in orientation and teaching programmes for student nurses.
Provide feedback to the Nurse Manager on proficiency assessments of student nurses.
Identify training needs relevant to the clinical area and contribute to enhancement of learning opportunities.
Participate in clinical induction of all new nursing and support staff.
Develop leadership ability and act as an effective role model.
Assume responsibility for own learning and development needs.

Person Specification

NMBI Registered General Nurse licence in good standing.
Post‑graduate qualification in neuroscience nursing desirable.
Minimum two years post‑graduate experience in neuroscience nursing.
Demonstrate teamwork, motivation, innovative approach, effective communication, change‑management understanding, planning, organising and time‑management skills.
Flexible to internal rotations, rostering, night duty, theatre on call, and floating to other departments.
Knowledge of new developments in the specialised area and national strategies where appropriate.
Patient‑ and customer‑focused, emulating quality, dignity, and respect for patients, relatives and colleagues.
High level of flexibility required to ensure efficient service delivery.

Qualifications
