23 Months, Fixed Term Full-Time Post Position Summary We are seeking a Post-Doctoral or a Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher in energy systems and climate-informed modelling to contribute primarily to the ClimEnergise project (Climate-Informed Energy Systems Planning to Support Ireland's Net Zero Ambitions). This role will lead the development and integration of climate-aware approaches into national energy and power system models, addressing the challenges posed by increasing weather and climate variability in Ireland's energy transition. The energy sector is deeply influenced by weather and climate. As Ireland transitions to renewable technologies-inherently weather-dependent-the influence of climate and weather becomes increasingly critical. At the same time, climate change and the rising frequency of extreme weather events (such as prolonged low wind speeds, cold snaps) present risks to energy security and system reliability. Integrating climate variability and extremes into long-term energy planning is therefore essential. This challenge is particularly pressing in Ireland, where limited interconnection capacity, high import dependence, and climate vulnerabilities further complicate the transition. In response, the ClimEnergise project is developing an integrated modelling framework that combines high-resolution climate data with energy system models to assess climate risks and identify cost-effective, operationally feasible mitigation strategies. The successful candidate will mainly work at the intersection of climate science, energy systems analysis, and power systems planning. The candidate will develop a novel modelling framework that translates climate signals to support cost-optimal long-term investment decisions, while also considering operational feasibility. The successful candidate will also contribute to the CAPACITY project, applying tools such as the TIMES-Ireland Model to support robust decision-making on Ireland's decarbonisation pathways. Applicants must hold a PhD in engineering, climate science, energy systems, or a related field. Demonstrated expertise in whole energy system modelling or power systems analysis is a strong asset. Proficiency in translating meteorological data into energy variables is desirable. Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI's. This can be reflected in the starting pay of a PD researcher. Similarly, as the PD scheme is an intergenerational training scheme completion of PD1 or PD 2 levels in one HEI will normally render that researcher ineligible for appointment at a similar level in another Irish HEI Researcher Career Development Framework | Irish Universities Association Project Title: Climate-Informed Energy Systems Planning to Support Ireland's Net Zero Ambitions (ClimEnergise) Post Duration: 23 Months, Full-Time Post Salary: Post-doc Salary: €46,305 - €52,863 p.a./Senior Post-doc Salary: €54,307 - €59,063 p.a. For an information package including further details of the post see Informal enquiries can be made in confidence to Dr Vahid Aryanpur, Email: For more details on the ongoing projects, visit the EPMG webpage: ClimEnergise: CAPACITY: Applications must be submitted online via the University College Cork vacancy portal Queries relating to the online application process should be referred to quoting the job-title and project name. No late applications will be accepted.
