ORBCOMM is seeking a Principal Embedded Linux Engineer to lead the design, development, and optimization of embedded Linux–based platforms for our next-generation IoT products. This role is based out of our Galway, Ireland office. We operate in a hybrid work environment, requiring a minimum of three (3) days per week onsite, with the option to work remotely for up to two (2) days per week. What You'll Do Architect, design, develop, and maintain embedded Linux platforms for ORBCOMM's proprietary products.Lead system-level design decisions across boot loaders, kernel, device drivers, BSPs, and user space.Translate product and system requirements into scalable, high-quality technical solutions.Optimize Linux systems for performance, reliability, boot time, and power consumption.Develop and execute robust test strategies to ensure system stability in mission-critical deployments.Enhance and support in-house build, deployment, and debugging tools.Perform root-cause analysis and resolve complex hardware–software integration issues.Collaborate cross-functionally with hardware, systems, and QA teams, providing technical leadership and mentorship.Who You Are
You're a hands-on technical leader with deep embedded Linux expertise and a passion for building reliable systems at scale. You're comfortable owning complex problems end-to-end and guiding teams toward high-quality solutions. Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (preferred).8+ years of experience in embedded software development, with significant focus on embedded Linux systems.Strong proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems.Deep experience with Embedded Linux, including:Bootloaders (e.g., U-Boot)Linux kernel configuration and customizationDevice drivers and BSP developmentYocto/Build root–based build systemsExperience with ARM-based SoCs(Intel experience a plus).Solid understanding of real-time concepts and RT-Linux or RTOS integration.Strong knowledge of communication protocols: TCP /IP, UART/RS232, RS485, I2C, SPI, BLE.Proven ability to read hardware schematics and debug using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG.Experience with version control, CI/CD, and issue tracking tools (Git, GitHub, Jira).Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to mentor engineers.Leverage AI-enabled tools and automation to support daily tasks and productivity. Commitment to continuous learning in digital and AI literacy.
