An overview of Breast Care Service at Beacon Hospital
The aim of the Breast care service at Beacon Hospital is to provide a high standard of treatment and care to Breast care patients with benign breast disease, a diagnosis of breast cancer, and a family risk of breast cancer.
The Breast liaison nurse plays a central role in the assessment, counselling, surveillance, and support of patients with malignant, benign breast disease, and a family risk of breast cancer.
Main roles, duties, and responsibilities of the Breast Liaison Nurse:
* Provide specialist knowledge, expertise, and care to breast care patients.
* Offer advice and support, recognizing the psychosocial impact of a breast diagnosis.
* Ensure continual optimal care for inpatients and outpatients and their families.
* Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate all aspects of the patient's physical, psychological, and social needs.
* Monitor patients ongoing to evaluate outcomes and adjust nursing care practices for optimum coordination and delivery of care.
* Develop and participate in follow-up and results clinics.
* Assist with Ultrasound biopsies alongside Interventional Radiology and the Consultant Radiologist.
* Provide pre- and post-operative counselling and fitting of prostheses when required.
* Offer pre- and post-treatment care and support, including information on treatment options such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and endocrine therapy.
* Participate in family history, follow-up, and results clinics.
* Provide practical information on altered image due to disease or treatment.
* Maintain accurate records, aware of legal implications.
* Collaborate with primary healthcare teams and participate in multidisciplinary conferences.
* Establish and monitor nursing practice standards and develop care pathways with Oncology teams.
* Lead in clinical practice, act as a resource and role model.
* Attend Breast MDT weekly and implement outcomes for patients.
Management
* Manage own caseload independently.
* Develop and implement policies, protocols, and guidelines.
* Identify service development needs biannually.
* Maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients and staff.
Personal and Professional Development
* Develop skills and knowledge relevant to the service.
* Undertake further training to enhance practice.
* Identify and engage in CPD activities.
Education
* Possess highly specialized knowledge of breast disease.
* Provide educational support for patients and families.
* Incorporate health promotion into nursing care.
* Participate in teaching and training programs.
* Develop educational materials as needed.
Quality Assurance, Audit, and Research
* Audit clinical effectiveness with Oncology team.
* Collect and analyze relevant statistics.
* Ensure evidence-based practice and participate in research.
* Evaluate findings and implement improvements.
* Contribute to service planning and budgeting.

Employee Profile for Clinical Nurse Specialist - Breast Care
* Qualifications: NMBI registration, minimum 5 years post-registration, 3 years in acute care.
* Skills: Excellent communication, organization, IT skills, and ability to work under pressure.
* Management: 2 years in medical oncology or surgical nursing.
