The College has a national advisory role in relation to medical standards and engages with the Medical Council, Department of Health and the HSE, among others. As a membership organisation, the College is responsible for providing and supporting the continuous professional development for general practitioners, numbering over 4,000. The College is the PGTB accredited by the Medical Council to provide professional training for doctors wishing to enter the specialty of General Practice and to administer the Professional Competence Scheme for General Practitioners.BackgroundThese fellowships are part of a larger overall plan to address gaps in general practice service in rural areas in Ireland. Funding has been obtained for two fellowship positions of two years duration each in the Mid West associated with the University of Limerick.The fellows will be employed by the Irish College of GPs and their work outputs overseen by a steering committee chaired by the College. This steering committee will include relevant representatives from primary care, HSE and the heads of discipline for General Practice in University of Limerick.Job PurposeThese fellowship roles align with the Limerick Declaration on rural healthcare 2022 which incorporates guiding principles based on a blueprint for rural healthcare.
