Job TitleGeneral Practice Clinical Rural Fellowship (2 positions available)Reporting toMedical Director, Irish College of GPs University of Limerick Academic LeadBaseCollege location is 15 Hogan Place, Dublin 2, D02 DK23 and a hybrid strategy is in placeContract typeFixed term: 2 years full time60% clinical work in a rural practice identified by the HSE (1 fellowship in South Clare and 1 in Rural East Limerick) and 40% in the discipline of General Practice at University of LimerickApplication closing date:11th February pmAbout The Irish College Of GPsThe Irish College of GPs is the postgraduate training body (PGTB) responsible for postgraduate education, training and research in the specialty of General Practice. The College has a national advisory role in relation to medical standards and engages with the Medical Council, Department of Health and the HSE, among others. As a membership organisation, the College is responsible for providing and supporting the continuous professional development for general practitioners, numbering over 4,000. The College is the PGTB accredited by the Medical Council to provide professional training for doctors wishing to enter the specialty of General Practice and to administer the Professional Competence Scheme for General Practitioners.BackgroundThese fellowships are part of a larger overall plan to address gaps in general practice service in rural areas in Ireland. Funding has been obtained for two fellowship positions of two years duration each in the Mid West associated with the University of Limerick.The fellows will be employed by the Irish College of GPs and their work outputs overseen by a steering committee chaired by the College. This steering committee will include relevant representatives from primary care, HSE and the heads of discipline for General Practice in University of Limerick.Job PurposeThese fellowship roles align with the Limerick Declaration on rural healthcare 2022 which incorporates guiding principles based on a blueprint for rural healthcare. These guiding principles include rural healthcare needs and delivery; rural workforce; advocacy and policy; research for rural healthcare.These Fellowships are a Collaboration between HSE, the Irish College of GPs and the Disciplines of General Practice at University of Limerick.Key result areasPrepare and deliver lectures and small group teaching including, for example, case based tutorials, communication and clinical skills and participate in formative and summative assessments at undergraduate and postgraduate levelsContribute to student development and role modelling including career advice and formal mentoringSupport student placements in their own clinical practicesSupport delivery of education via Irish College of GPs channels that may include webinars, contribution to General Practice Updates, online education, Newsletters, Forum articlesComplete a personal formal research and / or audit project with appropriate academic supportParticipate in a common research project with other Rural Fellows with appropriate academic supportWork collaboratively with relevant stakeholdersPresent academic work and that of the Rural Fellow role at national and international meetingsThe university Head of Discipline may allocate appropriate other work for the FellowsPerson specificationThe ideal candidates will have the following knowledge, skills, expertise and competencies.Essential Qualifications ExperienceA fully qualified GP with MICGP and a current member of the College in good standing or will hold such membership by time of taking up dutiesBe registered with the Irish Medical Council of Ireland on the Specialist Division for General PracticeBe enrolled on and in compliance with the Irish College of GPs Professional Competence Scheme or will hold such enrollment by time of taking up dutiesA demonstrable interest in rural practiceInterest in general practice education and researchArea(s) of special clinical interest relevant to rural general practicePrevious clinical experience in a rural settingDemonstrable connection to or experience of living in rural communitiesPostgraduate qualifications in education and / or researchPublished commentaries and / or research/auditHave demonstrated education and research skillsAbility to build and maintain strong relationships and advocate for the rural patientCompetent negotiator with excellent communication skillsAbility to design and deliver GP educationProven ability to evaluate and audit projectsDemonstrable understanding of common issues and challenges in rural general practiceDesirable criteriaArea(s) of special clinical interest relevant to rural general practicePrevious clinical experience in a rural settingDemonstrable connection to or experience of living in rural communitiesPostgraduate qualifications in education and / or researchPublished commentaries and / or research/auditHave demonstrated education and research skillsAbility to build and maintain strong relationships and advocate for the rural patientCompetent negotiator with excellent communication skillsAbility to design and deliver GP educationProven ability to evaluate and audit projectsDemonstrable understanding of common issues and challenges in rural general practiceBehavioural competenciesHave demonstrated education and research skillsAbility to build and maintain strong relationships and advocate for the rural patientCompetent negotiator with excellent communication skillsAbility to design and deliver GP educationProven ability to evaluate and audit projectsDemonstrable understanding of common issues and challenges in rural general practice
